  • Sorry to announce another passing of a shipmate. Barry Grant Maxfield passed away on 4/28/2008. We have a page for him in our memorial section.

  • Added story from Korean era about a downed RAF plane and the DeHaven's assistance to them. Mayday in the Tsushimi Straits
  • Added a story by our own Carl Berntsen about Typhoon Cobra and the DeHaven's experience.
  • Made some adjustments to the menus and links throughout the site. We've abandoned the discussion groups and the chat page as they weren't being used. Also, we've added additional relational links on selected pages.

  • Started a new menu item, "Vietnam" under the history category. Included are a couple of articles about the early Vietnam era by Rear Admiral James Montgomery, a former skipper of the DeHaven.

  • "Moose" Espenchied has donated $1000 to the DeHaven Scholarship Fund. He has challenged all other members to donate to the fund, "no matter what amount", by December 31. The particulars have not been figured out as yet on the scholarship fund. It was begun by a rather large donation from a deceased members family. More on this as we have it.

  • We now have the information available for the 2005 reunion to be held in Oklahoma City, OK from Sept 13-17. Look here for more information.

December 28, 2004

  • We've learned that we've lost a dear shipmate, Leonard Elam. Leonard was one of the survivors of the sinking of the USS DeHaven DD-469. He was a contributor to our pages on the history of that ship. He will be missed.
  • I've put some movie clips up on the website. They show the DeHaven underway and tying up in port. Check them out.

  • We're sorry to have lost another shipmate on October 8. Frank X. Bonilla served aboard DeHaven in WWII from 1943-1945. Our tribute begins here.

  • I'm sorry to announce that Donald F. Daugherty has passed away on September 7. He was one of our Korean War Veterans serving on the DeHaven from 1949-1951. Please see our tribute to him.

  • Dale Harbin RM3 adds to our collection some picture from his days on the DeHaven in 1953 and 1954. Dale was part of the radio shack gang while aboard. See them here.

  • It grieves me to announce that we have lost our President, Sam Pennington Last night. He succumbed to congestive heart disease while undergoing therapy for bone marrow cancer. He was a gentleman and a great leader of our Association. He will be sorely missed. I prayers go out to Sam's wife Marie and their family.

  • We're going to be dedicating a plaque honoring both DeHavens at the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, TX on March 26. For information, contact Sam Penington

We've lost another shipmate. Bill Wood, who recently was stricken with Septic Shock, passed away yesterday 2/1/03 at 5:45 PM. He was with family.

Bill was a W.W.II veteran serving aboard the DeHaven during the war from 45-46 as a RD3. Bill was known to many as he and his wife Marge were very active in the DeHaven Sailors Association and had attended the last six reunions. He will certainly be missed by all.

  • We've lost Dick Deppe. He died yesterday of a heart attack. He was a very active member of the Association and attended seven reunions. Dick was loved by many and will be sorely missed. His family can be reached at:

  • We're introducing a new photo collection from Dave Anderson. LTJG Dave Anderson served aboard DeHaven from 1965-1967 as 2nd Division Officer, DASH Officer and Navigator. He has been kind enough to share with us some terrific color photos of that era

  • James Shue passed away on Dec. 25 of pulmonary fibrosis. He was aboard the DeHaven from 1948-1953 and saw service in the Korean War. He was a BT1.

  • It saddens us to report the death of another member. This is the note we received from his widow.
     
    "This is to inform the friends of the DeHaven that my husband, Bill Conine, lost his battle with Pulmonary
    Fibrosis the afternoon of Sept 21, 2002 at the Bennington VT Veterans Home. Bill was a survivor of the sinking of the DeHaven Feb 1, 1943 in the Pacific.

  • It saddens me greatly to announce that Ron Empfield has lost his battle with Mesothelioma. Ron was a Viet Nam era sailor who was active in both the DeHaven Sailors Association as well as his local VFW. Ron will be missed. More details as we get them. Wife Susan can be reached at:

  • We've lost another shipmate. Bill Gray SO1 (1949-1950) passed away March 24 after battling a brain tumor for six months. Our condolences to his family. We have a picture of Bill playing his ukulele.

Our mailing list will keep you up to date on the latest developments here at the website and other information pertinent to the DeHaven Sailors Association.  If you were on the old list, you'll be migrated to the new one.   • I've included another version of the history of the 469. This time, it's from the Navy Public Relations department dated 1948. This version was considered very accurate by 469 survivor Nick Doulas. See it here.

  • Beginning with the above history account, I will be including PDF (Adobe Acrobat ) version so that you may print them for sharing with others. As time permits, I will make PDF versions of the others. If you don't have Acrobat Readers, it's time to click the button in the left hand column and get your free copy.

  • The benefit for Ron Empfield went really well with not only many friends and family attending, but several of Ron's closest shipmates as well. Gloria Brewster was kind enough to send us pictures.

  • As you may already know, the Wisner's (Dan and Mary) had a fire in their barn. They suffered quite a loss of equipment and belongings but fortunately, no one was hurt. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so they shared some pictures with us.
