Wilford E. Capps Sr. 1922-2010
Wilford E. (Woo) Capps, Sr., age 87 of Charlotte died February 10,
2010 at Presbyterian Hospital. A service to celebrate his life will be
at 2:00PM Saturday at Southside Baptist Church, 301 Elmhurst Road,
Reverends Steve Kelly and Matt Capps officiating. Interment will be in
Forest Lawn West Cemetery with military rites. The family will receive
friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral hour.
Mr. Capps was born in Danville, Va. February 11, 1922 son of the late
John Luther and Blanche Hite Capps. He attended Southside Baptist
Church and was formerly a member of McQuay Memorial Presbyterian
Church for many years. He was a graduate of Thomasboro High School,
member of Pine Island Country Club and retired as a Sales Executive
for Orders Tile and Distributing Company. Mr. Capps served in the US
Navy during WWII as a Seaman First Class serving on the USS DeHaven
DD727 headed for the Pacific. He was aboard one of the four destroyers
escorting the New Hornet Aircraft carrier in the Pacific to launch
airplanes into Japan. He was discharged from service on January 24,
1946
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Blount Capps, children, Wilford
(Will) Capps, Jr. and wife, Rose of Cramerton, NC, Alan Capps and
wife, Amy, of Indian Trail, NC, Dale Capps and wife, Cathy of
Charlotte, grandchildren, Justin Capps (Ryan), Aaron Capps, Reverend
Matt Capps (Laura), Katie Capps, Kristin Nash (Justin), Adam Capps,
and Shane Capps, great grandchildren, Cailey Ann Capps and Jacob Nash,
sisters, Jean Wyatt of Greensboro, NC and Pat Nicholson (Jerry) of
Mooresville, NC, stepdaughter, Pam Hope, step-sons, Jimmy Blount
(Carmen ) of Indian Trail, NC and Stacey Blount of Charlotte. Mr.
Capps was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Hoover Capps
and a sister, Ruby Smith.
Active pallbearers will be Justin Capps, Aaron Capps, Adam Capps,
Shane Capps, Jimmy Smith and Jamie Hoover. Honorary Pallbearers will
be Randy Wyatt, Ronnie Wyatt, Marty Smith, Brian Nicholson, Jerry
Nicholson, Jr., Tim Nicholson, and Harry Hoover.
