Served aboard DeHaven as EM2(May1965-May1966) Dear Old Friends, If any of you are still into boating,
and I'm sure you are out there on the water, I found a good
location www.boatsafe.com This location has a lot of good
information. good seas! SK2, Served from June '56 thru Nov 59. Really enjoyed the site Happy to be a DeHaven The best (and lucky) ship and crew in TF38/58 from
commissioning in Boston '44 to returning to San Francisco
'45. We saw a lot of action but didn't lose a man! RPT. The URL of "my" page on the website of my
friend Karl Kristiansen USS MANSFIELD DD 728 is http://web.meganet.net/kman/nfleon.htm
You can read the story of the French contribution FMS LA
GRANDIERE F731 in Korean waters 1950 alongside US Destroyers
MANSFIELD, DE HAVEN, COLETTE etc.. with other U.N. ships at
Inchon and Wonsan. Hi Old American Buddies! Thanks to Verner L. Newman III,
I've found your beautiful website. I served on board FMS LA
GRANDIERE F 731 the French contribution in Korean waters
1950. Verner served aboard USS Mc KEAN DD784 during the same
period. From MC KEAN DD784 s website, I can link with USS DE
HAVEN DD727 You can read our story, and the story of others
U.N. ships and USS Destroyers on Karl Kristiansen's USS
MANSFIELD DD 728 great website at the above URL. And links

any accounts and anecdote relating to the period. Write me.
Thank you and stay happy, old buddies, and may have good
winds and following seas. I am the daughter of Carl Richard Leffel Participated in Operation Hardtack I, May-Aug
1958,Marshall Islands Served on COMDESRON NINE Staff 1966-68. Sad to see the
Dehaven was scrapped. My new email address is Bosco42@fcol.com; just got it
changed the other day. Hope to see you in Oct.! My grandfather served aboard this ship. I wanted to see
what it looked like. Excellent site. Thanks for your efforts. A Very Interesting Web Site My brother was on this ship. I think the year was 48-50 I
lived in San Diego with him and his wife and got to go on
the ship for xmas. dinner & thanksgiving dinner. I
really enjoyed it. His name was Arthur Atkins. I am checking this out for my dear friend who is an
elderly shut in living in Plano, TX. Her name is Ruth
Steenbergen. She descends from the DeHavens of Breckenridge
Co. KY. She will join the club. I am doing this for her as
she has lost her husband all her children, she is very
interested in her genealogy and I hope to help her fill many
lonely hours. Scott it has been almost a year since I found this site.
I usually check it each day or so. Keep up the good work and
one of these days when I get a scanner that will do slides I
will send you some more of the DeHaven. So long for now Bob
Baker RM3 Great page! A helpful guide to see what the navy was like
back when it was the real Navy! GREAT TO BE ABOARD AGAIN wonderful page go ahead !!! and thank you. The Mount 51 fire rings a bell. I was quartermaster of
the watch ,and it was an afternoon hot as hell and the
gunners were shifting ammo around. All of a sudden a bunch
of chiefs came on deck up forward, some half dressed, and
they were really moving. The captain jumped out of his chair
and ordered general quarters. He said something like,
"When chiefs move that fast something bad is going
on!" It may have been a fire, but whatever it was over
real quick. If I had ever thought something like this
website would happen in my life I would have made a log of
my own! There is one fact that I'll always remember.
"Sea stories" are stories! Very good site. Pictures of the USS DeHaven brings back a
lot of memories. I served onboard from 1957 to 1959 and
departed as an RM2. I was the only black radioman onboard at
that time. Great work. This brings back great memories I'd like to see more for
the 68/69 years nice site, just found it and was happy to see all the
photos and information. looking forward to the next reunion
in co. July 22, 1945/Tokyo Bay. Who was there? Who remembers
what I remember? Just stopped back by to update my e-mail address. would
like to hear from anyone who remembers serving with my dad.
John F. Floyd, YN3. He was on the DeHaven from 51'- 55'.
Again great site and thanks for the memories. served aboard collett dd730 1952-1956 desdiv 91 call sign
spod mansfield and swenson. dehaven call nhvf. was radioman
2nd upon release. Looking for former members of my ship as I am recruiting
officer.. You have a great site here. Keep up the wonderful
work/ Excellent site...very professional. Looked it up because
friend said he had served on DD-727..I'll tell him about the
page.. Father, Ernest E.(Ernie) Reeder Served with original crew
on shake down to end of WWII. Would welcome any information
or pictures from crewmates. Dad pasted 10-89 It was great to find my dad's ship. John .F Floyd YN3. He
was on the DeHaven from 51' to 55'. He died in '96 and this
helps me remember him. Thanks to all!! I had no idea there was a ship named after my family. See you at the reunion in Colorado Springs in Oct. I have a story to tell, but I have to preface it with an
apology. I'm sorry but I can't recall whether this happened
on the 727 or my first ship, the Orleck DD-886. I'm
reasonably sure it was in '66. We were off the VN coast on
NGFS. I was the pointer in mt51 when we heard the call
"SILENCE IN THE MOUNT'. I hadn't heard that since
"A" school but I did know that something BIG was
wrong. There was a battery fire in mt51 handling room! While
everyone else was looking for a rosary or wings to fly away
with, one of our shipmates, a young (large) black BMSN (I
think), grabbed an extinguisher, leaped through the deck
hatch into the handling room, and had the fire out before
anyone in the mount could even smell the smoke! If I could
remember his name I'd repeat it in church every Sunday. At
our next port we stood to a full inspection while this MAN
was presented with, (again I think) a Secretary of the Navy
Commendation medal. If anyone out there knows more about
this incident, particularly the mans name and/or present
whereabouts, let me know. I still want to buy him a steak
dinner. Just checking it out. I steamed with DeHaven and Collett while in Blue DD744 in
the late 60's and early 70's. Probably the last deployments
before decommissioning. Hello, my Uncle was aboard the Dehaven when it went down.
He had received a purple heart and other awards and medals
during is enlistment with the Navy but sadly, my Grandmom's
house was burglarized and all the medals along with the
purple heart was stolen. I have tried and tried numerous
times to get some history on the ship like a list of the
crew and photos of the ship but I was un-successful in doing
so. My Uncle Eddie is the twin of my mom Edna. If anyone out
there who reads this message who can help me out with photos
or information on how to get the ships history or better yet
in obtaining my Uncle's medals - It would be great
appreciated... I wonder if I'm related? Contact me at 23 Helena Ave. Bethpage NY 11714 Contact me at 23 Helena Ave. Bethpage NY 11714 I loved the web site. Thanks to those that have made it
happen. Wish my dad would get on internet so that he could
see it. I was on the dehaven 57-59 in the radio shack...rm3...capt
phillips was my role model Hey Scott, what a great web-site. I wish the two DD's I
served on had something like this..!!Can't find much on my
ships but I remember them. Guess a sailor never forgets his

DESDIV 91 remember the LBNSY overhaul going home as a SN or

couldn't hear thunder. Oh what memories. Good memories.
Friendships, hardships, good times, crazy times. I'm 62 next
week and I wish I could do it all over again. Thank you for
great memory arousers. Remember the times in Japan,
Kaoshiung Formosa, Manila, Subic, Mantus, Auckland, New
Zealand. Midway and the gooney birds, Hawaii and the fresh
fruit and MILK chocolate and white. Mid-watches in CIC when
the cook would bake fresh bread and allow us to steal a loaf
or two along with a pound of butter. Frozen peaches 3# can

THANKS jpyman@bellsouth.net My maiden name was DeHaven and I was told there were
ships My dad was on this ship Hi Scott been trying to get back on this page . Had to
call Dan for help. Just wanted to see what is new. Did you
get my poems and stuff? Will look at new names and pic. My father, Dave Miles, Sr., served on the De Haven during
the Korean War. My Uncle found this wonderful site while
searching for information on Dad's ship. I would be honored
to hear from anyone who also served on this ship. What a
history it has had. If anyone served with my father, I would
be happy to hear from you and get you in touch with him.
Thank you, Terrie Yapp ETN2 1966-68. It was a great ship to serve on. Many
memories of a time passed, but a time lived to the fullest.
Does anybody remember the typhoon we rode out in 67? How
about the time we missed the refer while we were on the line
and had nothing to eat but spaghetti and goofy grape bug
juice for 3 days straight. My maiden name was DeHaven...how interesting to find
this! I have returned and I did get into the Engine room was
great!!! Served on the DE HAVEN during the Korean War (1951-1955).
Would love to chat with any sailor during that era. bill wms Wanted to give you all an updated e-mail address. Have
moved from the US Embassy in Mexico City to the US Embassy
in Nassau the Bahamas. Still looking for old shipmates that
served aboard in 1963-1964 time frame. I never served onboard DeHaven, but remember her from
Vietnam.. I was on the Damato (DD 871) in 1967..I was a
radarman 3rd..Damato was flagship for DesDiv.222..On 13
Sept.'67 Damato took two direct hits from shore batteries at
Dong Hoi.. ComDesDiv 222 transferred to DeHaven and Damato
went to Subic Bay for repairs. Damato and DeHaven were both
good ships and both names bring back old memories......Steve I would have never know of this wonderful connection to
my family name without this site. Thank you. Jeff Thanks for all the work that you've put into this
website. My half 1st cousin, William Carina, went down with
USS DeHaven 469, and I would like any information anyone
could furnish: acquaintances, pictures, stories that would
help me to know him better. Thanks. One of my most memorable Christmas days was spent on the
DeHaven while in port at Long Beach in 1958. I was a
"short timer" so I was volunteered for duty on
Christmas eve and Christ day. We had a bus load of kids from
an orphanage as visitors for the whole day. I think us guys
left on board enjoyed it as much as the kids. The reefer and
galley was open all day for anything we wanted and they were
stocked with special Christmas treats. We had a shipmate
dressed in a Santa Claus suit and gave the kids presents.
Got a little worried when I saw one of the kids on the yard
arm. It was very rewarding to share Christmas with those
kids. I understand from a chat I had with Dan Wisner that
the tradition continued. I enjoyed visiting the website again. I recognized one of
my shipmates in the pictures. You are really doing a
wonderful job, keep up the good work! Merry Christmas to all
and a Happy New Year! Being a DeHaven Family descendent I really enjoyed
browsing around your site. Great stories! Scott, Merry Christmas to all of the crew of the DeHaven
over the years. I think some of my best duty was on that old
destroyer.I remember filling up the drone shack with Honda
motorcycles when we stopped in Hong Kong just before
returning from our Westpac cruise in 68. Again Merry
Christmas, and may each of be thankful for what we have. Bob

bay. this was the original de haven? is there any history of
how it was sunk at salvo island? my brother david miles was
on the de haven in 1950 at Inchon. that is why i am
interested in the ship. i did not know that the first 727
was sunk at salvo island. i saw the 727 in pearl harbor in
1973 and did not know that it was scrapped in 96 until i
read your website. you have a great website and the best
information that i have found to date. paul miles couldn't believe there was actually a destroyer named

Thanks to Buck Owen for sharing your photos. There was one
there of my good buddy Steve Owen...who I sorely miss. The
site reminds me of the great times we had and the jobs well
done. I still say "Life at sea is like nothing on
earth". My father served in Vietnam on this ship from 66-68 My cousin, Caspar "Cappy" Hendrickson was
killed when this ship was sunk. I have recently seen a
scrapbook his father, Herman, assembled after his death when
he was inquiring about what happened to him. It was
interesting visiting this site today. My grandfather served on the J. William Ditter. These
pages help me piece together what you all went through. I
appreciate that people are creating these pages to remind us
all. My grandfather passed away before he could finish all
the stories and answer all my questions. As a young boy in boy scouts I had a scout master who
told me he served on the USS DeHaven. I cannot remember his
name now but thought I would see if the ship was still
around. I'd like to see it or pictures of it. Old crewman looking in...Happy Thanksgiving! I served aboard in 1958 I made one West pac cruise
aboard. We were homeported in Long Beach Ca at that time. Thanks to the association for issuing me an Honored
membership in the USS. DeHaven Sailors Assn. As an 469
survivor, I consider it a privilege to be held in such a
high regard by my shipmates. Thanks again, and the best of
Holidays to all. Tom Bogard's passing will leave a big hole
to fill, and I personally will miss our exchange of letters.

Navigator. 1961-1963 served as PN1 in ships office I was a DeHaven sailor (SA up to full RD3) 1949, 1950,

good work Served aboard Dehaven under CDR. Burdick 71-73. 1st

Depts. "Crossdecked" to Higbee (DD806) October 73,
as SH2, just prior to Dehaven's decom. Was aboard (MT 52)
during Dehaven's final 6-gun salvo. Have no access to own
PC/E-mail address right now (using step-dad's). Will get
back when more time (and computer) is available. Thanks for
the great web page! A shipmate, Earnie Burton (SH2) This is a small note that some may find of interest. When
I was a lad of about 11 I was a Cub Scout. One afternoon,
our troop took a trip to Long Beach for Navy Day and a tour
of a Navy ship. We went aboard a Destroyer. The tour was
very interesting and a great deal of fun running up and down
those ladders. It would have been an interesting footnote in
the memory of an 11 year old to soon be forgotten. However,
when we went to leave, my eye caught the number on the ships
bow. It was the 727, my fathers ship. All of a sudden, that
day became indelibly etched in my memory. Dad fought in the
Korean War aboard this ship. I sat many a night listening to
his stories of this ship and the battles they fought. I was
never in the military but by going aboard Dads ship I felt
as though I touched a part of the past and could feel it was
alive today. Most kids don't know anything about Korea nor
much less care. But, that day when I looked at the number on
the hull of that ship, it all of a sudden became very real
to me. This was something that you could never get out of
the musty pages of a dull history book or a history teacher
that knows nothing of what they are talking about. My father
had an 8x10 picture of this ship which I still have to this
day. I learned this ship was eventually broken up for scrap.
I am sorry she's gone. I served aboard this ship during the Korean War. I would
like to hear form others who did. please contact me. I was weapons yeoman 66/67 for J. J .Kolas .I have a lot
of good memories when I served on her. I was on the USS Dennis J. Buckley DD-808 from 1968 to
1970. Torpedoeman's Mate 3rd class. I still miss it. I'm a
tin-can man. Thank you for the great web sight. Served aboard the USS DeHaven DD727 Nov 1968 thru March
1972BT2, two tours to Vietnam Served on USS Collett DD-730 (1963-1966) which was in
DESRON 9 with the DeHaven. I found the parents of my Samuel DeHaven Brogan, and so
much more!! Please add me to the DEHAVEN list, looking
forward to meeting new cousins on July 4th. I served on the DeHaven during 1949-50 in the
Quartermaster/Signal gang. My GQ was on the bridge where
many hours were spent @ the helm and signal lights. Served
with a lot of good people and think about all the hours of
training it takes to man a ship such as the 727. I'm glad to
have found this website , it is very interesting to read
about the crew and the experiences. Thank you, Excellent Site!!! great site keep up the good work see you at the reunion
in Sept. I have enjoyed your site very much. We operated together
on Yankee station. I was on the USS Collette DD-730 and was
in Dash Division for about a year and then transferred to
the ET gang. Even though we worked long and hard I consider
it to be one of the best parts of my life and would not
trade it for anything in the world. Thanks again good luck
