If anyone has any Sea Stories, submit them to "Scott
Martin" scott@ussdehaven.org We don't want to loose the Sea Story link. Who would we lie
to then. Love the page. Pictures outstanding. One minor mistake;
the ship mentioned in the write-up on the DASH crash was an
LST, not a LSD. LSD numbers only went up to about 40. From
one Snipe to another, brings back many old memories and
reminds me of what a shipmate is. I served onboard only a few months in late 1970 as FTG3.
She was a fine ship! Sorry, I don't remember any names. It
was great finding this site, keep it going. If the date on
the wallpaper picture is correct I was onboard when the
picture was taken. Great website. Thanks for the link back to the DeHaven
Club pages. Enjoyed reading about our DeHaven ships history.
Interesting. Keep up the good work. Nice web page. Enjoyed browsing through it. Especially
the USS DeHaven I plan to order some prints. Makes one proud
to be a descendant don't you agree? Keep up the good work. Appreciate the site. Served in the Lyman K. Transferred
one of my men to the DeHaven. Good ship. Served aboard late 45 and 46. TM 3rd class. 511 NW 91st
St. Gainesville, Fl. 32607 Served on her from 1963 till 1964. Don't remember
we that remember that after a visit to Australia we went
back to Vietnam and for the first time since the Korean war
fired 10,000 rounds of ammo. Have changed e-mail address since I first logged on back
last summer. Visit this site about once a week. Scott keep
up the good work. Bob Served aboard USS Dehaven from Nov 59 to July of 61. Came
on board as FA in after engine room. Left as MM3. Trying to connect my lineage Jonathan BOONE of Berks Co.,
PA to a Dehaven female. Jonathen moved to Bourbon Co., KY
and died there. I was FN to BT-2 on the De Haven in the after fire room
from 1969-1972. Looking for shipmates from the same time
period to talk about old stories and what's new. Surprised to find this data. Will come back when I can
spend additional time. Sorry it was scrapped, but all things must come to an
end. Served as EMO and CIC officer 69-71. Big Ed Casey was CO.
P.D. Wertz was XO...I'd love to know where he is. I had the honor of being on the USS DeHaven, for a visit,
when she was in Long Beach. What a beautiful gal!!! I know where J.P. Bonady, CIC Officer 1969-1971 lives. Right church but wrong pew. Was plank owner on another
USS DeHaven and served aboard until her untimely death at
Savo 2/1/43. I feel a kinship and a tin can sailors love
with you all. Keep up the great work. Al Breining DD 469 Got your e-mail, thanks for returning the call. I'll
write more later. Clif. I have a new email address it is leroyc@swbell.net I am
looking for sailors who was on board between 1956 to 1959 I
was an electrician mate 3rd class. Never served on the DeHaven (Great Name!) but then I am
an Army Officer - hope we can get another DeHaven Finally able to surf in on the Destroyers on line and saw
a link for the De Haven. Served in her at the end of her USS
career as a GMG striker that had cross-decked from USS
Higbee in Long Beach in '73. Did a hot turn over to the
South Korean Navy. Went on to serve in 10 other destroyers
of different classes until my retirement as a GMC in May '96
after 24 and 1/2 years. I served on the Dehaven from 1966 to 1969, all in
Vietnam. hey Tony Scaltreto, are you listening!! Interesting to find a ship named the DeHaven. Nice web
sight My father, Fred F. Foster SKCM, did a few tours of duty
on the DeHaven, and told so many stories about it, the name
has become part of my family's lexicon. He knew that ship so
well, he could describe the way it smelled, or felt in a
rolling breaker. When I was in Chinhae, Korea in 1988, I
noticed the DeHaven name (which had been painted over) on
the stern of one of the Korean ships and took a picture for
my father. He recognized it immediately and the memories
came flooding back. He was surprised how good she looked and
pleased to see she was still in use. I was sorry to hear it
had been scrapped in 1994. If any of you knew my father, I
would love to hear your stories as I am trying to write a
book about his experiences. You may e-mail me at the
following address: jfoster@swhs.swsd.wednet.edu Thank you
all for you service. Hope this gets my name lit up in blue. Just seen Jim Riggens info on the picture Sudden Squall.
I have been trying to find out where to get a new copy for
about a year. Thanks Jim. I plan to put a copy in my office
on the ship that I am now on. S. S. Cape Isabel. It will go
well with the hand carved model of the DeHaven that I have
on my desk. Downloaded the picture of the DeHaven, thank you so much
for this. I travel for my job a lot, and I enjoy keeping
connected to my "family" by this piece of our
history. Great site! JUST WANTED TO SAY HI. THE PAGE IS GREAT. KEEP UP THE
GOOD WORK! I have a 35mm slide taken from the helo deck 1960 at
Hunters Point aboard the De Haven . Please let me know if
you wish a copy I 'm a past crew member of the Blue dd744.
David Q Sayer Columbus Ohio Nice web page. I am in Great Lakes in school. I am a FC3
and will graduate March 18, 1998. I will be stationed at San
Diego and will be on the USS Elliot. If you have any info
for me, please let me know. Thanks. Great site, good luck on your reunion! USS Roanoke AOR-7, June 83-May 86. MM2 Thanks for the great page. I was a sonarman aboard the
Lyman K Swenson DD729 from l951 to 1954. Remember DeHaven
well. Great site. It's apparent that a lot of hard work has
gone into this site. My father's last name is misspelled,
could that be corrected. He was SO3 Law Risken. Thanks LCDR
Law Risken, Jr. While surfing the net I came across a great photo taken
in 1963. For all of you out there that were aboard DeHaven
then, it should bring back some great memories. I believe
the LSTs in the background included the Tom Green County.
Remember how that ship affected liberty in Yokosuka for the
entire fleet? What a wonderful web site. It sure brings back a lot of
memories of that great old ship the DeHaven. I served aboard
her from Dec.68 to Sept. 72 as a deck hand and TM-3. Would
like to hear from any shipmates from that era. The history channel on cable, has a special on
destroyers. One of the very last ships they show is the
DeHaven! Great program you will love it. A great home page! My son-in-law discovered it, told me
about it, and I am enjoying it. I now have, courtesy of
son-in-law, three vintage 1945-6 pictures of the DeHaven,
one taken in San Diego while I was a crew member. DD 727 1962-1965 Just dropped in to have a look at your web page. Very
good, a nice layout and well put together. I'm a survivor of
the USS Drexler DD741. Scott, we must have seen each other's
ship in Okinawa at some time or another. We got whupped.
Smooth sailin'. Gene. Scott, please e-mail me you mailing
addressnon-e-mail,that is). I have a Xerox copy of a DeHaven
cruise book that I'd like to get into your hands. By the
way, I think this is a superb job that your doing...very
polished, professional, and appealing to the eye. It makes
me wish that I had taken more pix of the 727 when I had the
chance. Looking forward to hearing from you. Mannie Gentile

49505 I can't believe there is a web page for this old ship. I
served on this tin can from 71 to 73 just before it was sold
to Taiwan. Just got here but looks good so far. Looking at your DeHaven Association page, I have
identified six names that I remember well while serving
aboard Dehaven during 1961-64. It would be nice if the list
of members had the dates served onboard. I see your sea
story page finally came about. It should be interesting!!
The idea came from the USS Conyngham (DDG-17 website,
another ship that I was proud to serve on. Keep up the good
work! Please update your records as my e-mail has changed to
jbar1@downcity.net Never served in the DeHaven but served on other ships and
shore station between 1958 and 1979... Enjoyed your page I wanted to let you know that I love your page. It is
always good to hear from another destroyer. DD 741 sends you
greetings fair sailing. Come Visit some time! GO NAVY!!!, Very proud to let the world know that my
father served 3 tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He was in
the navy for 12 years. My brother was on the US Carl Vincent
for 4 years. I've been able to find three old Inchon invasion
shipmates. We've all talked with each other by telephone and
e-mail. I've got a hunch were going to be getting together
in 1998. Kudos to Scott Martin and also to Dan and Mary
Wisner. I am looking forward to telling a few sea stories
when Scott gets that aspect of his website up and running.
I'd like to tell about setting in the whale boat about a
hundred yards off the beach on the East coast of Korea at
midnight on Christmas Eve. We were listening for the sound
of steam engines trying to sneak between tunnels. Some day
I'll tell the rest of the story. Robert F. "Bob"
Burns Skivvy Waver USS DeHaven 1950 Very nice site, thank you for the information and keep up
the good work. It is nice to see the site. I am the son of William M.
Kaufman (now deceased) commanding officer right after WWII. Thanks for my daily history lesson and the well designed
site. My father served aboard the USS Lyman K Swenson DD729
and was at Inchon. Heard the story from him several times
throughout the years. I have been trying to track down
information on DD729, yours is the first, I appreciate your
outstanding efforts. Anyone that could provide additional
information about the Lyman K Swenson or the USS Manchester
(CL-83) during the Korean era, please contact by email,
thanks in advance. My assembly of information will hopefully
be used in creating a web page in the memory of my father
and his shipmates. I've written an article for Naval History magazine on the
senior naval officer wounded in the Korean War – July 8,
1953. I have also published a reflection on the Korean war
published in The August/September issue of Tin Can Sailor.
I'm just getting the hang of the internet which you seem to
have mastered. Great job! Scott, Nice web page! I was on the Mansfield and ended up
in the DASH crew. Sounds like your DASH crew did more
exciting things than ours! We just flew 'em and if they
crashed it was pretty mundane, in the ocean! Did you paint a
car on the side of the bridge as a target destroyed? I
really enjoyed the visit. Do you know what ever happened to
Robert Lee, he was on in 66-? I think he was a yeoman. liked it very much ...... h.c. morris is my dad, told me
about this web page. Great site. I was on the Mansfield DD-728 and have a
section on the ship. Stop by for a visit. Karl Very interesting Web Page. I served aboard a FRAM II
Sumner Class, The USS Douglas H. Fox DD-779 from 6/66-6/68 USS Willard Keith DD775 1961-63 including the Cuban
Blockade of'62. Signalman. Operated with the Hayns worth and
Henley frequently. Would love to here from some of the
skivvy- wavers from those days. I was a BT2 on the DD-729, man does this bring back
memories . Nice job! change my e-mail address as shown above. noticed one of
the association members was my old skipper cdr.(at the time)
james Montgomery. remember the day he left the ship in Hong
Kong. BT on dehaven 1960 thru 1965. DECIDED TO COME ALONGSIDE TO SAY HELLO AND TO SEE IF YOU
GOOD FOLKS ON THE DEHAVEN CAN DO ANOTHER TIN CAN SAILOR A
FAVOR. I'M A RETIRED NCC, HAVING DONE SO ON 31JUL85. MY
FIRST CAN WAS THE USS KENNETH D. BAILEY (DDR-713), WHICH WAS
ORIGINALLY HOME PORTED IN NEWPORT, RI. HOWEVER, IN JUN OF
59, SIX CANS FROM NEWPORT GOT U/W FOR MAYPORT, FL; MAKING US
THE FIRST DESTROYER SQUADRON TO CALL MAYPORT HOME. WE'VE HAD
4 REUNIONS TO DATE AND ARE SCHEDULED TO HAVE OUR 5TH IN JUNE
OF '98 IN BUFFALO. IN 1999 WE'LL HEAD FOR MAYPORT/JACKSONVILLE
AND BOSTON IS SCHEDULED TO BE OUR YEAR 2000 STOP. I'M ALWAYS
SEARCHING FOR NEW NAMES TO ADD TO OUR GROWING LIST OF BAILEY
SAILORS. SHOULD ANY OF YOU GUYS FROM THE DEHAVEN KNOW OF
ANYONE FROM THE BAILEY I'D SURE APPRECIATE HAVING THEM GET
IN TOUCH WITH ME. I'VE BEEN HAVING PRETTY GOOD SUCCESS USING
THIS METHOD. HOPING TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON. YOURS IN SERVICE,
PROTECTION AND TRUST. ERNIE PINA, NCC, USN-RET 1958 looking for george archambeou (archie) would like info on reunion sept 98 my zip 19020 I would like to hear from anyone who served on the ship
between l950 and l957. Thanks You have an outstanding site. Now if only I could find a
Frank Knox DDR-742 site. I didn't see my ship listed on the
Sherman Class listing? I was aboard Feb61 to Jan63 with
Desron 9 homeport Yokosuka, RDSN-RD3. I'm building a Sumner class DD ship model and would
greatly appreciate any info about these ships which would
help me make an accurate replica. I was aboard the USS DeHaven DD727 in 1950 and made my
first tour in Korea aboard her. I then transferred to the
Lyman K. Swenson DD 729 for two more tours. I think I was
aboard the DeHaven at the first invasion of Inchon. I was 19
years old. I just was able to rediscover an old DeHaven
buddy via the internet and a 1950 address book. His name is
C.H."Carl"Langston. We have renewed our friendship
and correspond almost daily via e-mail. Looks Great Keep up the excellent work Crew member 1958-1961. Went from FA to BT2 and reenlisted
onboard for 6 years in May of 1961. Left for BT-B school in
September 61 just before she left for Westpac home port.
Would really like to contact "Reb" Nobles- and Ron
Harris BT-both during the early 60's. Great site, I was there on the DeHaven at the same
time and remember the crash of the dash, subic bay, and the
space capsule. I even have a picture of me and a friend
standing in front of it. Served aboard from '66 thru '68 as part of the Dash
Crew...many fond memories of this time. ESPECIALLY
YOKOSUKA!!! Would be great to here from former shipmates!
Maybe solve the mystery of who forgot to tie the damn thing
down!!!!!! Here for friend Ron Empfield (LIMPY EMPY) who served on
the DEHAVEN My father, Don Holloway, served aboard the DeHaven Jan 59
thru Mar 61 both before and after FRAM. He was an FT2 and
was more commonly known as "Doc". He has some good
pictures and will bring them for me to scan in sometime. He
and my mother live in Wiltshire, OH. The site looks good. It
even has more information about the DeHaven history than he
knew about. I am a member of the DeHaven Sailor's Assoc. ( as a
family member). I served in the Army Transport Service in
the South Pacific, going to many of the same places as the
DeHaven. We are pleased that our ancestor's memory is
honored. Was in B division from June '66 till May '69. Would like to
hear from anyone else from B division. William Wesly Davis IS looking for a shipmate named Jesse
Deitzman. Last known to be in CA. If you know his
whereabouts please let me know. They served together on the
Hopewell. My father, William Wesley Davis served on the DeHaven and
the Hopewell until 1956. I would like information on a
reunion for his shipmates. Please e-mail me with the
information or you may contact him @ William W. Davis, Rt 1
Box 143E, Lockhart, TX 78644. (830)875-5537. Hi. I was stationed on the USS DeHaven in 1944. I'm with
son's secretary learning how to surf the internet. Nice
site. I'd like to see more people from Vietnam era. I served on
the Dehaven from April 1966 to Dec. 1969 as Bt2. Scott how
are you doing? Would like to see you in Charleston S.C. in
1998. USS DeHaven !! I was amazed to find a site dedicated to her.
I was on her from Feb 67 to May 69. Looks like the same time
you were on her. I was ET2 / ET1 Riggen then. I still am
Riggen but no longer ET2 / ET1. I have not seen or heard
from anyone from the DeHaven for probably the last 20 years.
This sure brings back some very good memories. What I was
surfing for was I am trying to find out how I can get a full
size print of the picture "Sudden Squall". I
notice it is the banner photo at this site. Maybe you can
help me find one. A page on the site talks about a reunion
in progress. Is that true? Where is it? I still get a couple
of navy publications but have never seen anything about a
reunion of DeHaven sailors. Please advise. You've got a
GREAT site. Keep up the good work!!! Jim Riggen Actually my name is Chuck. . .I'm showing my father the
Internet for the first time. He wanted to look up his old

1950's. I have enjoyed listening to many of his stories
about the ship and her crew. I hope to be able to show may

"Sam Barraco", I served on board from Nov. 69 thru
Dec. 1973 as a Storekeeper First Class. Any of my old

the De Haven veteran. USS SHANNON DM25 '53 TO '55LOOKING FOR COMMANDER
POINDEXTER Just Checking IN? On board USS. DeHaven from Dec. 1952 until Jan. 1956.
Looking for old shipmates. Worked in forward engine room as
MM2 with Chief Flack Looking for a mate called
"Moose" Very Good U.S. Navy March "69" until Dec. "78"
Served in DeHaven from Oct. "71" until her
retirement in Dec. "73". Served a total of ten
years with most all of it enjoyable and/or at least
adventuresome. Reported aboard as an FN and left as an MM2.
All of it was in the aft. engine room with the exception of
my fair share of mess cook duty. Gunner's mate '56-'58 Aboard DeHaven 1967-1968 Fantastic web sight is an understatement! This is by far
one of the BEST I have seen! THANKS! Just passed through to find DeHaven info for a friend
that served on her in 1944 I enjoyed your site immensely am presently working on my
family tree just stumbled here will definitely share with
friends and family Served aboard the DeHaven from Oct 61 to July 63.then
transferred to the Maddox along with BM1 Jeffries. I was a
QM3 at the time. I Couldn't believe seeing your picture of
the two ships together . Great page, great idea. Some great pictures. Nice to know the name has some
history! Just looking. I was on the USS COLLETT (DD-730) from 1963
to 1966. I believe the DE HAVEN was in DESRON 9 at that time

ship. and one more thing I did not like about being on the
ship was that there where no girls. I went aboard in June 1960 while at Hunters Point, left
May 62.Best years of my life. Would do it over again if I
had the chance. If you are not a member of the DeHaven
Sailors Assn, please e-mail me for more information. Dan,
President DeHaven Sailors Assn. You have Inchon misspelled as In Cheon in summary A great web page, glad to see some pics from the past. Very nicely done. My wife loved the pix of the
"young" Scott Martin. 61-63 in Yoko homeport with DESRON NINE. Love those
Taiwan Straits. Did CIC and COMM duty. Any of those types
out there from that timeframe? Looks good. Sam is the Vice President of the Dehaven
Sailor's Association but I do all the computer work. My memories of the DeHaven are mixed. Serving on board
the ship in the late forties, I was a rather new sailor, and
during my brief tenure was involved in two separate ratings
plus a year away for schooling. Therefore I didn't remain in
either position long enough to become skillful while serving
on board this ship. Home page looks great...Congratulations!! Thanks for the Home Page! Bath Iron Works built great
ships. What an education my tour was. Peter Wood, ENS,
Gunnery, 1950-52 I have many fond memories of DeHaven. Went aboard in 1961
in Yokosuka and rode it back to Long Beach in 1964. I was a
sonarman at the time. I really remember our trip to
Australia (Cairns, Townsville, and Brisbane) in 1964. Hope
to hear from any shipmates during this period of time. Nice page Scott!! reported to DEHAVEN Jan 59 transferred Apr. 61 took her

won't be shipping out for quite awhile. I am certainly
looking forward to serving aboard ships! Anyway, please come
and visit my site. Enlistment from Jan 1950-Jan 1954 -- rating of YO1.
Served with staff of Desron NINE 1952 through 1953, then to
USS RochesterCA108. I served on DeHaven about a month at a
time during 1953& 1954 while converting war diaries from
ships to Desron NINE. Fun times! I logged in yesterday and received an answer today which
I promptly deleted by accident. With due apologies, I would
ask the sender to please get in touch with me again and I
promise I will not make the same mistake twice. Thank you
for your considerations. Yes, I have many stories to tell
about destroyers some of which are even true! I retired off the DeHaven on 3 Feb. 1972 as MMCS. I am
presently Chief Engineer on the S. S. Cape Isabel and we are
berthed at pier 15 at the old LBNS. (the DeHaven's old home)

be glad to have a cup of coffee if they stop by. My office
phone is (562) 435-9589. I was a rivet heater at Bath Iron Works from Jan 42 to
June 44. I heated the rivets that put together the keel,
some of the hull and deck plates, depth charge racks, etc.
Was guest speaker in Tampa at reunion celebrating 50th
anniversary of commissioning of DD723, USS Walke. Love to
hear from Tin Can sailors. Looking for old shipmates. Served aboard the DeHaven
DD-727 1963-1964 Great site! What a shame we just missed saving her in
'93. What other Sumner class destroyers are still around? Went aboard during FRAM in San Francisco. Left her
