To all the 66-68 shipmates. I have located our CO,
Captain Donald Franz. He is retired and living in Palm
Harbor, Florida (Tampa/St. Pete area) Address and e-mail:
3109 Edgemoor Drive, Palm Harbor, Fl. 34685 Capt Franz @aol.com
I'm sure he'd like to hear from his old shipmates. Smooth
sailing, Skip DAUGHTER IN-LAW OF FRANK R. HROMADKA I served with the DeHaven as a member of the U.S. Naval
Sea Cadet Corps in the early 70's including the 2 week
reserve cruise during which we fired the last 6 gun salvo in
the Pacific Fleet. This occurred on 31 August 1973 off of
San Clemente Island. At the time I was working in the Fire
Control Center. The Commanding Officer at the time was CDR
Joe D. Edwards, and I have a Photograph of this salvo which
is signed by CDR Edwards. I can remember the times on the
DeHaven with amazing clarity. These are also very fond
memories. After high school I went on to served in the U.S.
Army for twenty years and have since retired. My uncle John D Oliver was aboard the USS DeHaven DD469
and perished when it sunk. I served aboard the USS BELLE GROVE LSD-2. Please let me know if I can join your organization. I
sent an email also. Nice site. LOVE SHIPS...USN 1960-64 ABOARD USS Magoffin APA-199

USS BORIE DD704 Just checking in to see what's new, or old, as the case
may be. Served aboard in 66 & 67 in the gun gang. "Tonkin
Gulf Yacht Club", we're still here. We need your help! We have formed a committee of the
Naval Mine warfare Association and have opened a web site to
advertise our efforts. These Navy Ocean Minesweepers were in
commission for over 41 years, but now are in danger of being
lost forever. Only eight are still in government hands and
are scheduled to be scrapped within five years. There are NO
OTHER wooden hulled minesweepers on display in the U.S. and
only one other on display in Europe, but converted to a
Patrol Ship. We fully realize that this will take a long
time, but with your help, in placing our Icon on your web
site, we will get the word out to the Navy community.
Information about how to place our Icon is available at:

our web site can be viewed at http://www.geocities.com/saveanmso/

. Let's get together one more time before we croak! _1970 Boot Camp Company 169 RTC Orlando Hello, first of all let me start out by saying what a
great site this is and keep up the great work. ok, my mom's
brother (Edward Doran) was killed on the Dehaven 469 when it
was sunk, I am looking for anyone who can send me some
stories or better yet some pictures of the ship that I can
give to my mom. We tried and tried for years to research the
ships history but had no luck from Washington. My Uncle
Eddie had received a purple heart but it was stolen from my
Grandmother's house during a burglary. If anyone can help us
out with information on how we can obtain another or with
any stories or pictures of the ship or better yet if you
knew my Uncle Eddie, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you once again and may god bless everyone of you. Been three years since I was here. I've retired, moved
and went back to work. My new email is listed above.

I was known back then as 'Poncho'. GREAT PAGE. TRULY ENJOYED READING ABOUT THE USS DEHAVEN,
A SHIP WE IN THE FAMILY WERE UNAWARE OF. THANKS FOR THE
INFORMATION. very good link site I was on the USS Borie D.D.704 merry Christmas. just remembering a Christmas 1970, I
think, the USS dehaven, in Taiwan. Just want to wish all the De Haven sailors a Merry XMAS,
and a Happy New Years, served aboard the De Haven when she
was a reserve trainer in 71 and 72. Even though we only had
a small regular Navy nucleus crew aboard and were not
supposed to be underway over 72 hours at a time we got more
than our share of calls to do what other destroyers could
not handle. Merry Christmas and a happy good 2000 to all you old
salts. I remember my first Christmas in the navy (1965)
aboard the DeHaven. None of my family had my address except
for my mom so they sent cards and presents to me in care of
her. She boxed them all up and sent them off to me but they
never arrived! Later we heard there had been a fire in a
warehouse in Subic and a lot of mail was destroyed. My chief
(Chief QM Morris) was all concerned about me for not getting
anything. Around Easter of 66 I remember telling him I was
giving up the Christmas Spirit! He was a really good chief
and is the only chief I remember by name. I was on the
Brooke, the Collette and a year at NSA DaNang but my year
and a half on the DeHaven was the best! Let's go Dehaven

reading about my home for about 4 years. This is a great
service to a great ship. Enjoy the ships log. I am a plank owner and survivor of
DD469.[Boy, am I dating myself]. The WTO is getting all the
attention in my Seattle area. Kind of reminds me of the
protests of the 60's. Anyway Scott, Dan, et all, keep up the

or who survived, I would appreciate hearing from you. Terry

decided to write again hoping to hear from some friends that
were on board the DeHaven from 61-63. If Jim Law and Tom
Brown happen to see this, send me an email. Very impressed
with the website! Like to hear how the reunion was. Was on the DeHaven 727 for almost 4 years from 69-73. I
was a snipe. Worked in main control engine room. Its been a
long time. Sometimes it's hard to remember all those guys.
Only seen a couple of shipmates since I got out. I was
surprised to see a web site for this. Brings back memories.
Thanks I am the son of the late Bob Schefter, Sr.- FTG2. My dad
died five years ago due to a sudden stroke. I was pleased to
get a call from Skip Meinke a couple weeks ago while he was
trying to track down my dad. Without knowing anything more
about me other than that I was the son of a former shipmate,
he sent me his original cruise log book and a videotape to
borrow so I could see some pictures of my dad I had never
seen before (we lost most Navy memorabilia in a house fire
ten years ago). My family and I thank Skip for his
generosity and sincerity. The book and video are great. We
appreciate being exposed to this important part of my dad's
life, and would love to hear any memories of my dad that
anyone has and is willing to share. The website is
wonderful. -Bobby Schefter Served 1948-'52 Lowly seaman assigned to steering, Served on DeHaven from 1968 to 1972 as deck hand and a
TM-3 New e-mail address for me. Hi Scott, Like your pic on the Dehaven web sight it is
only fitting to pay respect to those who gave their lives so
we could live in a free country. If only the younger ones
could see what war is like. I hope they never will though.
Ask anyone who has been there it is not a pretty sight. So
here is to all the vets out there. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU First of three ships I served on (1966) My dad is Capt. Arthur White. And my husband (the history
fanatic) thinks this web site is great! We are looking for
anyone knowing my Dad and Mom, Captain Arthur White and
Wanda White (then Lt.). He served on the USS DeHaven a few
years after they were married (gunnery officer during
invasion of Inchon), but we were hoping that someone
"out-there" might remember anything about friends
they both might have known. It is their 50th Wedding
Anniversary on December 18, 1999. It will be in Seattle. If
anyone knows anything we would appreciate it!! Being a Navy
family, moving around and such its, its hard to find out
information without asking Mom and Dad. Thanks Just checking in looking for any thing new Farewell old DeHaven DD-727. You out ran, out shot, and
out classed all other destroyers. I spent 38 months on board
and helped to keep you going I was aboard the USS. Gurke (DD-783) from Sept.l955 to
June 1957. I was impressed with your home page keep up the
good work. Hope everyone attending enjoyed the great weather in Colo

think, ET1 last time I saw him in 1966. Wow, I was surprised to find my old ship. Really brings
back the memories.... I'm amazed that there was an actual ship with my last
name...incredible! Served from:1948-1952 Served from: 1948-1952 Served from:
1948-1952 LTjg in ENG and WEPS 1965-68. Enjoyed the website. It has
brought back many good memories of shipmates and our times
together. My father, Roger Perl, was on this ship during WWII. I
have always wondered about his ship and am glad that there
is information about it. I'm looking forward in learning
about it. Both Dan and Gary found by Skip Meinke Still surfing after a hip replacement and a bad back. Just want to say that this site will be a blast for my
father when he gets a chance to see it. Roger O. Perl was a
FC3 and served from 1944 - 1945. He reported aboard at the
Ulithi Atoll and departed at Shanghai. I passed your web
address (and another one - http://www.plateau.net/usndd/dd727/)
to a few of my siblings in Mansfield Ohio so the old man can
check out the site(s) later on. MY DAD SERVED ON THE 727 DURING THE VIETNAM WAR FROM 1964

guard for a state racing association official. PLANK OWNER OF DD747 SAMUEL N. MOORE I was glad to find your site. My uncle Earnest F. Brown
was KIA on the DeHaven during WWII. My family has been
researching family history. I was glad to see that the
sailors lost during the battle are remembered and listed. I
would like to make a correction, though, about my uncle; he
was from Marion, OH, not Cincinnati. I hope you will make
that correction. For whom is the DeHaven named? I would like to know the
history of this. Thanks! I am glad I found this sight Brings back memories of my days on her sister ship, USS
Lyman K. Swensen (DD-729). I served on her from March 1965
to May 1966. I served aboard her as a signalman in 1973. I saw the

has been on the DeHaven 727 and many others who have checked
out this site. Hope to see a lot of old shipmates at the

reunion. We had a good time and talked about old times.
Later and hope to see a lot of you soon!!!! I didn't serve in DeHaven but I sailed with her many many

correction to make. I got Sam's last name wrong. His name is
Sam Russell. Not Sam Smith!! (Old age memory loss!) Anyway,
I remember Sam letting me have one of his shirts when my
girlfriend and I were dressing up as sailors for a
masquerade party. We had the pants made by a local
waterfront tailor. It's fun to remember such things. Very nice Web site you have here. Please visit the Web

recent history. Thank you for visiting and posting on the

this line available here? MY name is Jim Story and my brother Joe and I served on
board in 1969 and 1970. I was on board from 5/01/70 through
11/14/70. Had a good time and I really liked the DeHaven. Hope to see more members from 44-46 at the next reunion
in Colorado Springs. This is an outstanding web site. Great site navigation.
Looked at a lot of great pictures. read some sea stories.. I
will be back. With your permission, I would like to put a
link to this site from my USS Oriskany site. I was a student in Hong Kong from 1962-65. Of course,
being an American girl of 16, my friends and I really loved
it when the ships were in port. In fact, all of my school
friends and I loved touring the carriers and other ships. I
met a lot of sailors because I helped out at the USO making
cookies for the sailors, but the ones I remember the most
are three from the De Haven: Jim Pitts, Rex Poe and Sam
Russell. They became like brothers. Every time the ship came
in, we would call and invite them to dinner and my mother
and brothers and I would show them the sites. Their pictures
are part of my family album, and their names are part of my
childhood memories. I have tried to find out whatever
happened to them, but have not been successful. Just out of
the blue today I searched on USS De Haven and found your
site. If anyone knows where they are, how they are, etc., I
would love to know. What a great find!! Keep up the good
work. Great Web site you have here. I would like to see this
informative Web site honoring your ship entered into the
Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club Web Ring at www.tgyc.cjb.net . I will
be glad to help you enter this Web site into the Web Ring if
you need assistance. Email me at MarkIW@Prodigy.net. I hope
with the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club Web Ring we can encourage
others to read about the sacrifices so many made during that
period of recent history. Thank you for visiting and posting
on the discussion forum at the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club Web
Ring Web Site (www.tgyc.cjb.net) . I invite others to join
us in the discussion forum on the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club Web
Ring Web site. Tonkin Gulf

on the DeHaven during the Korean war. I believe he was a TM3
at the time. He is a retired CS1(SS). His phone number is
843 753 7606. His e mail is eweaver@infoave.net. My other
friend who lives just down the street, Gerald Starr, was on
the 727, I think around 1956 or 7. He was a CS3 at the time.
He is a retired CSCS(SS). My brother, Arthur P. Barrett Jr., was killed in action
aboard the Dehaven in 1943. His name is misspelled on the
rolls of those who died with the ship. My husband wrote an
e-mail to Scott to correct the mistake. My brother helped
build the Dehaven at the Bath Ironworks in Bath, Maine prior
to joining the Navy. Best regards hello, anybody from 1968 thru 1971 out there? I'll have
an E-mail address in about a week. SCOTT, YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB ON THE WEB PAGE Great page! On board from April 1950 to July 1955 went

post on the Destroyers Online page. I'm a MSgt with the HQ
