In October of 2007, I rec'd a packet from Leslie De Meyer. He had sent me a magazine that offers military ribbons and other memorabilia for sale. I would like to thank him for the time and effort to send this to me, and I was sorry to hear about the passing of his brother. I also apologize for it taking so long for me to respond to his kindness. Clif Alligood SH2, USS DeHaven 1966-1969 Clifton Alligood <alligoodc@embarqmail.com> Ocala, Fl USA - Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 15:35:21 (EST) Served on board 61-63 in the after engine room Operation Hardtack I. Was transferred to DeHaven in Mar 1958 to participate in Atomic Test in Marshall Islands. Left ship in Yokosuka (shipyard overhaul)in Sep 1958 for discharge. Was BT2 in forward fireroom. My Father served on this ship during WW11 and his name was Arthur Toodie Gomez. I have a print of the ship and many photos of crew members and events that took place on the ship. My Dad is still alive and he shares many stories with me about the time he served on the ship. I have an album of photos from the war and the places my dad went. Served on board Sept. 1961 -1963
R-Division EM My Grandpa, former Seaman Charles Warrick, sailed on the USS DeHaven in the early 1950's. I came to this site because I was curious about it. Just updating my e-mail address. Really miss Gene Heath and Bill (Willy) Carter. We had some great times between 66-69. Looking for pictures for a video that I'm doing for school. The person that we interviewed was on this ship when it was in Japan. I served aboard the DeHaven 1972-1973 as a MMFA in the after engine room. It was quite an experience for a 17 year old kid In retrospect our ship truly reflected the American melting pot and I was proud to serve with so many examples of what makes America the only place in the world where people of different backgrounds can work together for common goals. I served on the DeHaven from 67 to 70 and wouldn't mind hearing from some of the BT's.. My grandfather was a corpsman on the USS DeHaven II during WWII, and I am now an ensign in an EA-6B squadron in Whidbey Island. Wanted to learn about my grandfather's ship and what he went through in WWII. Thanks for making this website available, it's great! On 27th December 1953, I was the navigator and captain of a Royal Air Force Sunderland flying boat RN302 which crash-landed on the sea just east of Shushi Wan near the north east tip of Tsushima Island. This followed a fire in our No. 4 engine. The aircraft was badly damaged but we managed to taxi into a small inlet just north of Shushi Wan. I and my crew were rescued and taken aboard the USS De Haven DD-727, a very fine ship with an equally fine and hospitable crew. The De Haven fired one shell into our aircraft on the morning of 28th December to sink it and remove it as a hazard. We spent three happy days aboard the De Haven (which I remember served excellent quality food) and took us to Sasebo. I wish to express gratitude to the Captain and all crew members for their help, hospitality and thoughtfulness. I was strait out of Great Lakes Bootcamp when I came aboard my first ship USS De Haven 727. I met many friends that I lost contact with. During my tour of duty, I had the pleasure of seeing my first Change Of Command. I did a 6 month tour in Vietnam and was sent back again to take over for a sister ship that had broke down. Hope to be in touch with some old friends !!!! Came aboard '65 left Oct '68 Was part of the Gunfire Control Gang. Loved Japan Howdy to all! Sorry to hear of Bill Kahoutek's passing. If anyone knows how to get a hold of (QM3) Randy Getchell, please let me know or give him my e-mail. I hope this year brings joy to you all.......Buck So sorry to hear of Billy Kohoutek's passing. I was his div officer and he was the only ET who could keep the SPS-29 radar functioning. A good guy with a great attitude. I"m REAL proud to be the daughter of a USS DeHAVEN shipmate. Charlie is my Pop...and a DAMN good one, too!! Love you, Dad... Lisa SERVED ABOARD FROM 11-63 TO 6-67 WORKED IN R DIVISON WAS SFP2,NICK NAME SPEEDY I just checked the website and heard of Bill Kohoutek's passing. I served with Bill, a great guy. God Bless you Bill. Sincerely, Mike Forbes RD2 My grandpa was on this ship from 1944-1945 and I never had the chance to meet him I was just wondering if anyone on here was on the ship at this time or if there was a family member who was on this ship. If so I would love to talk and maybe see if anyone knew him. Because if you did I would love to hear stories about my grandpa I never meet but I know he is amazing. I served on the USS Mullany DD 528 until it was sold to The Republic of China on Oct. 6, 1971. I then transferred to the USS Dehaven until mid 1972. I was a QM3 and made QM2 just before I got out. I served aboard the DeHaven 1968 - 1971 as a
BT2. Great to see her memory cherished. I am the daughter of Charles West(Arkie)was his nick name. Dad was on the DeHaven from 1948-1951. If any one remembers him please let me know. I served in the after engineroom from 1965 to 1967. I would very much like to hear from anyone else who served during the same time. Here's wishing everyone a very Happy and Safe New Year! My father was on the DeHaven in WWII and I only recently discovered this fact. He asked me to investigate and see what I could find for him. He just turned 82 today and he and I had the discussion about his time in the Navy during our Christmas visit. His name is Orville Owen Hill. Any information you could send to me would be greatly appreciated. Also, how might I obtain a photo of the ship for my father? Thank you so very much, Mona (a greatful daughter) Just dropped in to wish everyone a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. Rodger Auld, BM-3, First Div. 1965-1967. My grandfather(Francis Patterson)served aboard the De Haven in 1944-45 during World War II. I believe he was a "machinist mate" who worked below decks. When he passed away in 1998 he left me a beautiful huge scrapbook with many old pictures of the De Haven in that era, one or two are even in color! There are many mementos too - like a scrap of pure silk from a Japanese parachute, paper money from the Pacific islands he visited, letters and postcards home, brief notes about life on board, a small Japanese flag he "liberated" when he went ashore in Japan, etc... It's a very interesting little collection in scrapbook form. Many black & white pictures. I plan to keep the memory alive by passing it down to my child so we'll never forget the sacrifices made by our forefathers during that horrible time. The DeHaven Was the first navy ship I was and is what made me join the Navy. I was 8 or 9 years old. My Uncle served aboard during the Korean war , he used to call her the raven DeHaven. His name was Ronald C. Harris , he was a deck ape. Members of USS DeHaven Assn: I am not a sailor or did I have any relatives on board your ship, however Capt. Thomas Henry Hederman was from my hometown of Webster, MA, and he was captain of the Navy baseball team in 1923. I am trying to put together a story about him since I learned about this Tokyo Bay, nine destroyer attack recently. Does any one have any info on Hederman or know what happened to him?? I am a Natonal Park Service Ranger in Boston and do give tours of the USS Cassin Young which is docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston National Historical Park, so I am on a Fletcher every working day. DD-793 also has a fine Association. Thanks for
any help on Capt. Hederman. Address anything to the email with HEDERMAN.
Ranger Rich Tourangeau Just read the log and learned of the passing of my old friend Bill Kohoutek. I served onboard DeHaven from 1969-1971 as RD2. William Kohoutek who served on the USS De Haven as an electronic technician(radar) from June of 1965 through June of 1969 sadly passed away this last Sunday. He was a friend of mine and I had the privilege of attending his Memorial Service.
He was laid to rest at Ft. Logan National cemetery on November 30. 2007. He will be greatly missed. Contacted this site in memory of William Kohoutek, a DeHaven veteran from the Viet Nam era who passed away suddenly the weekend of Nov 24-25, 2007. My friend William (Bill) Kohoutek was stationed aboard the USS DeHaven in the late 60's , early 70's. He made several Vietnam deployments aboard her. He passed away No. 24, 2007 in Boulder Colorado. I just wanted to let his shipmates know. I am also a Vietnam era sailor (FDR, Forrestal, Independence) and we talked of our ships often. So I understand the love he had for the Dehaven. Thanksgiving day and suffering senior blues about the good ole days gone by. Thought I'd drop in and say Hello to all DeHaven Sailors. Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless.
Jerry "Steve" Stephenson BT2 1958-61 Served aboard as BT 4/65 till 7/67. Didn't know this site existed till today. Ship's history ends in 1954. Whats with that, or am I doing something wrong? My brother found a site on you tube, found out Desron 9 got a Naval Unit Commendation in 9/68 for actions from 6/66 till 68. Would like to here from other BT's--or anyone--. Can only check e-mails about once a week, so no fast answers, sorry. Mac Sherwood, Mr. Barney's best buddy. Awesome Website!!!! My father served on the De Haven during the Korean conflict. I just wanted to see what she looked like. Looking for information on the USS DE HAVEN Seems I might be related to Edwin Jesse DE HAVEN. My late Father Herman Bozym (Whitey)as he was known was a sailor during War World II. I would love any information if anyone knew my Father, that you can share with me. I also have a great looking old print of the USS DE HAVEN copyright 1944 by Will Cressy that my Father left me and there is a picture of ship with three (3) silver stars below it, and a picture of a plane with two (2) silver stars and one (1)that looks like gold/bronze star below the picture of the USS DE HAVEN. They have listed a silver star is five (5)and a bronze is one (1) I really don't know what they actually mean and have a idea and would like some information relative to the stars. My Father rarely talked about the war and said the guys that were lost are the heroes. He did mention he was in Tokyo bay for the signing of the Japanese surrender and would love to have any pictures anyone might have to go along with this great print I currently have in my possession. If anyone knew my Father or has any other pictures or information that I can compile, please email me. Thank you for your time and service. I was raised in principal, by my Grandfather, Howard T. Luy, who served aboard the 727 during Korea. He was a Chief Commissaryman and a Gunnery Liaison Officer and had some wonderful stories about his shipmates. Chief Luy passed away Christmas of 2005; he was 88 years old. I'd love to hear from any ship mates that may remember him. Hello Everyone, I am the daughter of Elmer Berends sailor of the USS DeHaven. Many years ago I brought my dad to the reunion of which he never knew existed, It was his fathers day gift from me, we went to the one in Portland Maine. He had a wonderful time and it really changed his life. He was never able to speak of his friends on the ship due to the way I guess some sailors had passed. My dad is now at his rest since June 5th 2006 I still read your news letter and am proud of all our men who serve our country. Thank you guys. Betty Anghelone daughter of Elmer Berends and proud of it! Just dropping by right now to pick up Pres. Jim's info to pass on to a mutual friend (actually a former Navy pal of Jim's from B school). Also I must add that I had a terrific time meeting so many great folks at the recent combined Sailors Assn. and De Haven Family reunion held in
Sep '07 at Plymouth Meeting, PA. I highly recommend that anyone with a connection keep in touch with this fun group. Thanks for the interesting stories and opportunity to learn the history of your ships. I have just finished watching Ken Burns "The War" and memories have brought back a question. My husband, Kenneth R. Campbell, served on the De Haven as Trpdmn 1st Class, from '44 to '45 when he watched the the signing of the peace treaty. He seldom spoke of the War but did mention kamkikazes and that once, in a hurricane, the De Haven was the last destroyer to get fueled and that the others without fuel to head into the storm were lost. Does anyone know where and when this happened. Ken died in 1982. The documentary has reminded me of the terrible injuries, great loss of life and, for many, peace of mind these men suffered--that, and their incredible courage. Ens/Ltjg 53-55 I am the wife of a Plank Owner, George "Hank" Welbourn, CMM. I followed the DeHaven from Bath, Maine to Boston for the commissioning, to Norfolk and on to San Diego when the ship left for the Pacific. My husband passed away on Sept. 10, 2001 SORRY I COULD NOT MAKE VALLEY FORGE. TO MUCH GOING HERE NOT TO MENTION HURRICANE SEASON. I DO PLAN ON GOING TO BRANSON, MO. NEXT YEAR. My father in-law would like any information. He was serving in 1946 and is looking for information on anyone still outhere. Served aboard 45-46 I was a BT3 on the DeHaven for most of 1959 - discharged in December. We did the Blood Alley cruise and annoyed the Chinese by sailing into their water I served on the DeHaven in late 1965 till Feb. 1966 Great website! I was searching for Mr. Mike Welbourn who happen to remember my father Jeffrey Meyer. I'm also thankful for Mr. James Roach who has helped me look for contacts who happened to meet my father. Right now I am still praying that someday I will meet and know personally my lost father Jeffrey Meyer-USS Flint-AE32. Thanks for this site.If anybody know him please email me. Thank you and God bless you. Aboard from April, 1950 to April 1953 Just thought I'd say HOWDY! I would really like to talk to someone who could give me the date of the beach shelling of what appeared to me (through the "big eyes") to be a family Like to come back every now and then to tell all my shipmates "Howdy". (That's cowboy talk for "AHOY") Served on DeHaven DD727 from 68 to 72 2 years on deck force and 2 years as TM3 Just wanted to past on a comment: I listen to the audio tape of
" Halsey's Typhoon" On board DeHaven we did see some rough seas. But nothing like the task force under Bill Halsey's task force during World War 2 Dec. 1944. Anyone who likes sea stories , this is a must. Unreal!!!!
My hat goes off to the men who sailed into Halsey's Typhoon and made it through. For the 100's who did not make it. They are "The Navy True Sailors" For they endured the worst of the Sea has to offer, and paid the price..... A Must read or Listen to story.... My Uncle Paul L Vigeant served aboard during WW2 as a gunners mate. He passed away last Sep. I am looking for some info on him so I can construct a \"Remberance Page\" on the \"Together we Served\" web site.

I learned of my uncles death as a young boy from his father, my grandfather, who was also in the navy on another ship during the battle of gaudacanal. If anyone who knew my uncle and could tell me anything about him would be greatly appreciated. A boilerman on the USS DeHaven 1971 stationed in Long Beach. My brother, Walter E. Fiandt Jr..He was a Fireman first class aboard the De Haven 727 during WWII. Grandpa passed away in March of '92. I was 12 at the time. My mom and my aunt and uncles also know very little. If any one out there remembers my grandfather and can tell me more about what he was like then it would be much appreciated. Walter PUSEY FC3 did our art work; and Bill COFFIN from Nantucket Island, Main was ships\' photographer as I recall - only man allowed to have a camera. Anyone know about these two shipmates? (my oldest Son is an officer in the USMC and is in Iraq right now) and my husband is retired ANG. I am also proud to have a son in the AZ ANG. See you in Tucson! Take care everyone. I was attached to the DeHaven when I received my discharge in 1971. Since then I have remained in the Southern California area. Until recently my family and I lived less than two miles from where the reunion will be held. As I attend church not far from there I will try to stop by on Wednesday during the reunion. It will be good to renew old acquaintances and I'm sure we all have some stories to tell. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS A PHOTO OF THE LAST SIX GUN SALVO THAT DEHAVEN FIRED, THAT THEY WOULD SELL ME ? It has been a few years since I have checked out the wedsite. Scott, you and who ever else works on this wedsite have done a great job. I served on the USS Dehaven from 1968 (It just got back from Nam, I believe it was based in Japan for a year, or more.)to 1971. Started out in the boiler room, but switched to Machinery Repairman, which was in with the electricians. It was all educational. I sailed on the DeHaven from 1963-1965, homeported in Yokosuka Japan. Looking forward to talking with some of my shipmates and listening to old scuttle butt. Also am interested in finding ship merchandise such as coffee cups, hats, badges, etc. Greetings to all. I was aboard 66/67 and worked in the forward engine room. I have great memories; my first ride on a ship, my first time sea sick, first time cleaning a head, first liberty in a foriegn port, first general quarters for the real thing, my first crow, and my first 50 hour day. I took my first real steps toward growing up aboard Dehaven. I'll always remember her and the faces and names of those I served with continue to flash through my memory almost 40 years later. My dad was on the De Haven in the 60's, in fact, his picture is on this site-Jimmie "Robby" Robinson. It is wonderful seeing all of the pictures and even recognizing some of the names that I remember from my childhood. Keep up the good work-wonderful site. My great-uncle served and died on the 469. His name was Jack Gladd. I would love if anyone had some pics I could give my grandmother or some stories I could tell her about e-mail me please Attention former shipmates:

I post several month ago in an attempt to find some friends of my dad's. That search has been slow, however the information I have gained on this wonderful ship makes me feel like I know my dad even better than I thought I did. The things I have gathered from this page are going and all his old slides (being turned into prints) will be his Christmas present this year.
Again thank you all
Dave Hi, My dad served on board the U.S.S. DEHAVEN in 1944-1945 his name is Robert (Bob) Newquist. He was an Electrician's Mate. He passed away in 1990. Does anyone remember him? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Hi, My father Arthur Pierce Sr. was one of the few Black sailors on the USS Deheaven (DD 469). He was wounded but survived the sinking of the ship. As a kid, I've heard many many stories about the USS Deheaven, so many that I could almost picture how it was like being a sailor aboard the ship. It would almost scare me to death when my father use to take off his shirt and I'll see 3 big holes in his lower back that looked like doctors pulled skin together to close his wounds. I remember the story like it was told to me yesterday of how a white officer who was abandoning the ship, saw my dad dying on deck and he helped throw him overboard which saved his life. I use to look at my fathers back as a kid and stare at where srapnel almost cut him in half and I would cry. He's mentioned so many names of people (white and Black sailors), he had so many stories of what he's seen and places he's been while on the Deheaven. I've been searching for information about the USS Deheaven since I was 15 years old and now I've finally found something. As for my dad, after receiving the purple heart he retired from the Navy, married my mother and they moved to Brooklyn NY. He retired from Madsion Bakery in 1965 after building a successful Real Estate investors business where he owned 6 big apartment building. My father passed away Dec 8, 1986. Thank you for building this site I was able to finally put everything he said about the USS Deheaven together I was on the DeHaven from 1951-1955 as a gunner's mate 3/c USS DE HAVEN 1958-59 I am the granddaughter of Elemer Glenn DeHaven and my Dad was Howard Glenn DeHaven. They have both passed away, grandpa in 1964 and my Dad in 1993. I am interested in my familly's history, know some of it, Hi,
I am looking for anyone that knew Frank C. Felter, Jr. He was on the Dehaven January 29-February 3 in the Solomon Islands. I understand that the ship was sunk by Japanese dive bombers February 1st. First chapter of Military Order of the Purple Heart was established in Albany, New York. the group named the chapter in honor of Frank C. Felter U.S.N. He married and I believe there was a daughter born. Uncle Frank Lived in East Greenbush(?) New York. Uncle Frank had two sisters, Mary Emily Felter Heeder, (my Mother) and Ruth Alice Felter Dunton, Aunt Ruth is still alive and lives in Cannaan, New York. Howdy, this is Cliff Haviland...3rd. class quartermaster during '44 and '45...feel free to drop me a line and say hello! My Uncle Cato Hans Swalling was killed on the first De Haven by Japanese dive bombers.Thank you so much for designing this site. It is a great legacy that my son and his may view to share the great story of our nations veterans and the huge sacrafice. If anyone knew Cato, please e-mail alswalling@juno.com. Just wanted to say hi! I see that Willy and Wessal are still around. It was great back in 1966 thru 1968. My father was on the DeHaven in the sixties. I'm currently seeking three of his buddies, Tom Coates, Jay Tiffen and Pete Peterson. If you can help me contact them please email at ougot1to@yahoo.com Please put Navy buddies in the subject. Hi Scott, I sure enjoy being able to keep in touch with what is going on with ever one thru the web page. You do a wonderful "JOB". Keep up the good work. Served aboard DeHaven 65-66 in westpac was on board the DEHAVEN MAR 1957 TO NOV 1958 I was in the "Sittin Ducks" from 1947-1951, I wonder if anybody remembers me.I was torpedo man My father served aboard the USS DeHaven 1942-1944. His name was William(Bill) Dale Saums. I dont know if he had any nicknames while he was in, and I am not sure of his rank (possibly E4),and served as a cook. Im filling out this guestbook just to let anyone who may be looking for old shipmates that knew him to know that after the war, he ran his own business in Findlay, Ohio for many years, and passed on in the early 1970's.
God Bless our sailors and soldiers as they answer the call yet again, and God Bless America. Just reading a copy of DE HAVEN NEWS FOR 15 August 1945 and recalling cutting the 3" headlines WAR ENDS, and printing the paper about 0300 after getting off watch. Of the 44 crew members quoted in that paper, only 3 are listed in our current roster - an indication of our mortality.
Quote from the C. O.: ''THANK GOD THAT'S OVER. THIS IS THE DAY I'VE BEEN LIVING FOR SINCE 7 DECEMBER 1942." Greetings from the USS Blue July 1950 - March 1954 USS Alfred A. Cunningham, DD752 [First Division, Operations Division, Engineering Division, Log Room Yeoman I am the son of Philip Beilock, who served on the DeHaven from its commissioning until its return to San Francisco afer WWII. Served on ship from 1957-1960 I have not been on this great site for quit a while. I served on the De Haven from 1968/72. My new email is Mikeforbes@ellijay.com On board 1968 as a QM2 I am seeking assistance in researching a story about Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class EDWARD PUTNAM PRICE, USNR, a World War II sailor who I believe served aboard the (second) destroyer U.S.S. DeHaven (DD-727) during 1945.
Price was awarded the NAVY and MARINE CORPS MEDAL for heroism in rescuing Ensign PAUL COCHRAN, USNR in the Pacific on 12 February 1945. Cochran was an aviator who was forced to parachute from his aircraft, landed in the water and was covered by the parachute canopy. Pharmacist’s Mate PRICE saw him in distress, dived into the open sea from the destroyer’s forecastle, swam out to him and held COCHRAN up against the weight of the sinking parachute until additional assistance could be given from the ship.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knew Price, witnessed his act of heroism, has a memory of him, knows what became of him, and/or has a photograph of Ed Price that they would be willing to share.
Thanks,
Bill Brown

My lovely wife just found this web site today and told me about it. I served aboard DeHaven '68-'72 (SM3) with Bob Tesmer, Briggs. It's really nice to read some shipmates names. My best to you all BT3 from 1948-1952 Fellow DeHavenites,
I served aboard the DeHaven in 1971. Several Members of my Reserve Unit from St. Joseph, Missouri spent 14 days aboard DeHaven. We had an interesting Acdutra as when went went out for a few days its was fun going back to sea again.
The fun really began when we pulled back into the Mole Pier and took out about 15 piling and when we swung the stern towards the pier we clipped the Bainbridge in the stern and knocked the "B" off the name. We also knocked DeHaven's flag pole into the bay..
The next day we were listing to Port taking on water, a DC plug blew out in the Blue Print and Chart Locker and it was almost 12 hours before anyone took notice. The Long Beach was on the other side of the pier, they went to GQ becaue of us and the marines secured the pier and all the gang planks of all the surrounding ships. Needless to say, what a fun Acdutra. And the CO of the DeHaven at the point was removed from the ship and imediately transferred to the ship yards.
I am the Web Master of the USS Maury AGS16 come visit our Web Site at http://www.ussmauryags16.org

tim McNICHOL BM3 I just found the web site after reading the 23 Feb 2004 newsletter. I served as Supply Officer from June 1962 to July 1964. I have fond memories of our Westpac ops and our crew. Then Ensign Roy Wallace was our resident Naval historian and I am delighted to see him continueing as a De Haven historian today. I still see our first skipper then Cdr J. W. Montgomery now RADM retired. He was and remains John Paul Jones for me. I expected to serve three years and get out, but stayed 35 years largely because of my first tour in DeHaven. There were numerous highlights from family life in Yokosuka, Taiwan patrol, winning the Battle E in 1962, chasing the Russian sub with a casreped sonar and Father Jac La Boone on the bridge in Oct 1962, 30 days as station ship Hong Kong in 1963, Kennedy assaination while we were at sea in Nov 1963, several trips to Subic and Vietnam for the coups, Australia in May 1964 where we played basketball against a local all star team outdoor! s, under the lights with local radio and newspaper coverage, Port Mosrsby, Tonkin Gulf in June 1964 relieved by the Maddox and Turner Joy and coming home to Long Beach in July 1964. Thanks for the memories. I'm the son of Robert(Bob)W. Newquist

To answer a few questions I had on my email: I served from August 1965 to about May 1967 in first division Boatswainmates under BM2 Grehalva and BM3 Lopez. I worked mainly the forecastle, well actually midships forward, main deck. I have a few photograpghs of the crew and parts of the ship and as soon as I can figure out how to send them with the notations attached I will. Unfortunately I am not that great with computers, so please bear with me. P.S. Thanks for the email. We currently have 2 Fletcher Class Destroyer models 16ft long and are radio controlled. Your web site is Class(A). It was a pleasure to vieww it. Thank You. We are not trying to sell you anything. This is simply an
invitation for U. S. Navy veterans and friends to visit us at:

Anyone interested in a ride to Salt Lake from Vegas? for the reunion I served aboard the DeHaven from August 1965 to about April 1967. I always wondered what happened to the old tin can, since I stumbled across this web site I now know. I was thrilled to find this site. The DeHaven was before my sons and husband were in the Navy but I do have a name connection. I attempted to buy a ship's cap on EBay and was so disappointed when it went over $40.00. Now I can buy my own, although truthfully I would rather have had a cap that one of the DeHaven crew wore. +207 490 5610 fax I just wanted to say thank you for this web site i feel that I may learn more of what my grandfather was talking about when he served in World War TWO, I have his papers from that era and I will cherish them for a very long time and so will my children , and their children some day. They will hold onto a part of history, forever. This website is so important and i commend you on a job well done. THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!! The photos Lt. Anderson provided really brought back memories. I was aboard fron '65-'67 as well. I was in M Div. assigned to the evaps in main control. This site has really been a blessing. Thanks Scott, and all who contribute to its success.
. My son, Brandon DeHaven, who has been in the navy for just a little over one year was just assigned to the USS Stump a Navy Destroyer.
Stumbled upon this sight and found it ironic that there was a Destroyer named DeHaven in the past.
Don't know if the name sake of the Destroyer was a distant relative. My Grandfather served on this ship during the carrier task group strikes to neutralize Japanese air fields in the philippines from Nov. 6-14 1944 and Dec. 11-23 1944. I wasn't aware of the USS DeHaven, my great great great grandfather, named Edward DeHaven came to Kentucky from Pennsylvania after serving in the Revolutionary War, he had some brothers that were in business and remained in Pennsylvania, so Edwin might be related. Our daughter found this site. She knew her dad and I would want to chek into the information. I was just looking to see if anyone remembers a guy by the name of rudy chavez. he served on the ship in the mid 60s'. I think he was a ships barber. He died in 79 I believe. he was a good friend of mine and I just wanted to know if anyone remembered him as he was a nice guy. Was attached to the 728 '55-'59 and had some good friends that were attached to the 727 and often wonder whazzz up with them. H.G. (Skeets) Herring, J.W. Renfro. all RD's. If anyone is in contact with them, send along my e-mail to them.

kloraas@wilgrp.net I was on the Dehaven from 1958 to 1960 Hello To All, I just wanted to take a minute and say Thanks to each of you for who you are, and the service you provided to our country. I know that I met MANY of you at the San Antonio reunion, and greatly enjoyed myself. I thank you also for meaning so much to my dad, Carl "Dick" Leffel, Snipe727. I can't explain how much the association meant to him. In his memory, I WISH EACH OF YOU A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON. Sincerely, Clemetine (daughter of a SAILOR!) I want to wish every one a very Happy Thanksgiving. There is still no snow here where I live in Alaska, usually it is here by the first week of October.
Johnny Miller I am just a friend of Charlie West We came upon this site while searching for information on the USS Saratoga OOOPS...Made a mistake in my log entry yesterday [11/22]. If you want to join me in sending a card to a Sailor in the Gulf you do need to add 1st class postage. I think a lonely Sailor would appreciate a Christmas Greeting given what he/she may be facing in the near future. If you have not received the address, please let me know.
Law Risken 54-56 Is there interest in joining me in sending Christmas Cards to Sailors serving in the Gulf? My son who is stationed with the 5th Fleet in Bahrain thinks He can get permission from the CO. If approved and there is interest, you can send cards to the unit not an individual and cards would be shared. No stamp required.I thought we could make this a project this Christmas. Please let me know if you would be interested.
Law Risken..SO3 54-56 i served aboard 70-71 ships store looking for old shipmates dempsy ornendorf, george puskar or anyone else My Grandpa served on USS DeHaven 727 in 1944. I recently found a sketch of his ship which I had restored for my father. That led me here, and
I'm glad it did. My Grandpa served on USS DeHaven 727 in 1944. My father recently found a sketch of the Dehaven w/ ribbons and stars indicating the number of planes and ships the DeHaven destroyed. It was quite tattered but was able to be restored. I am sorry to say my Grandfather passed away 24 years ago, I was 12. I wish I had known more about the time my grandpa served this great country, but i was too young then. I was very pleased to find this site. I must confess I was hoping to find someone who had served with him who could maybe give me some insight. His name was Albert J. Schaub. I know my chances
aren't good, but i'm glad i came here anyway.
god bless, and thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you veterans. my dad served on U.S.S. dehaven 1948-1952 Thank you for your support of my dad (Ron), he talked about the USS DeHaven alot and the fellow shipmates he had. again thank you for your support. I've recently gotten very interested in Naval History, and have decided to make a CD/scrapbook of my dad who served in the Korean War between the years of 50-55. He was stationed in Newport, Rhode Island where I was born in 1955. I know he served on the USS DeHaven and the USS Mansfield. I'm just trying to find out any information on any of the buddies he may have served with. I know that he was in Pearl Harbor Oct.15, 1952. My dad's name is James Loeffert, born and raised in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. If anyone has any info that would be great! Thanks I can be emailed at kickerheart@cableone.net I am one of the few remaining DeHaven's in the family from philly. I'm glad to see that even after doing our part in the revolution we came back to be just as hard in WWII, and even now with myself in the war on terrorism. Keep up the good work guys!! Want to say hello to my shipmates on the DeHaven ,JACK PARTAIN I never knew there was a USS DeHaven! I just stumbled across this site and enjoyed reading the messages from the past two years. I served aboard DeHaven June, 1964 - June, 1967. Long Beach - West Pac - Hunters Point - Long Beach - Yokosuka. Lots of Viet Nam: 24,000+ five inch rounds fired when I departed mid-'67, the most in the Navy at that time, and surely many more thereafter. 1st/2nd Div. officer, ASW officer, OOD, Navigator. Even flew DASH a little. Wonderful memories of extraordinary people and service, outstanding effort and quality. Would not trade those 3 years for anything. Mike My Dad Frank A Frazier Jr. served on the Dehaven April 1946 to Sept. 1948 as a Sonar Operator. He has some good pictures and film from that time. One buddy that he served with on the DD-727 was Pete Stankosky. If anyone wants to contact him please e-mail me and I can fax it to him. He is at the reunion now and hopes to see old friends that he hasnt seen in over 50 years. I was just looking for a hat for him and found this site very nice job. Looking for someone who remembers my brother, Ron E. Pettey who served on the DeHaven in early 1971 in Vietnam I am looking for someone who remembers my brother, Ron E. Pettey, from Texas, who served on the DeHaven in 1971-72. He has severe health problems, including diabetes, and we have wondered if his deteriorating health could have begun in Vietnam. Any information about his duties on board would be appreciated as he has little or no memory of Vietnam. Thanks, Nell Pettey Hill I was assigned to the DeHaven in the latter part of 1972 to help get the ship turned over to the S. Koreans. I came from the USS Higbee and was transferred to the USS Connole after working on the DeHaven. I was interested to see if anyone had a USS DeHaven patch to sell. I'm also looking for a patch from the USS Connole DE 1056.
The DeHaven was a fine ship, I hated to see it go.
(I was able to grab a ship's clock for a souviner!) I was on board the Dehaven 1962 to 1966 worked under Walters BM2 2nd division I served on the USS Dehaven from 1951-1955. I was a Damage Control Man. I remember having many great times on this old ship and many great friends. My late father, "Manny" Rosenfeld (B/M2), was a survivor of the DeHaven(469). Since he never told me much about his Navy days, I'd enjoy corresponding with anyone who knew him.

t Just checking in to read all the interesting massage. I had no idea this page existed, all these years I've been wondering about these guys, and here they are! Gentlemen:
There will be a Sea Service Commemoration in Pusan, Korea on 30 May 2003 to honor all sea service veterans that served in the Korean War. This will be the only Navy led commemoration on the Korean peninsula during the 50th anniversary of the war. More information on 50th Anniversary events can be found at: http://korea50.army.mil/
Your ship was in Korea during the war and we want to welcome her crew back to Pusan next year. If you will have someone from your association contact us, we will provide them with details about the commemoration and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
By The Way ... please announce the date and location of the commemoration at your reunion in San Antonio in September.
