The message referred to two photos that were attached. These pix were'nt on the copy I recieved, and I would love to have access to them. Please help! Just a little bit of interesting information. I was watching the History Channel Friday night, they had a show on called Great Ships. It was about Destroyers, and at the end there was a short shot of the De Haven. I became interested in your org. at the time that my brother Carl(Dick) Leffel passed away. Met two of his shipmates at the funeral home. One took some pictures and I can't recall his name but am interested in seeing them. The funeral was very moving in that they honored him as veteran should be honored. God Bless you and Thank You for your service aboard the DeHaven 727 Hello to all of you DeHaveners! Thanks for all of the beautiful flowers & blankets you have sent to the funeral home for Dad, Carl R. "Dick" Leffel. He was aboard the 727 from '52-'56. Tonight at the funeral home we did something VERY unexpected... we found ANOTHER one of you guys. He came to Dad's viewing, and ended up stating that he was aboard the DeHaven the same time Dad was... I asked if he was active in the Association, and he said that he didn't even know about it until he read the paper with Dad's obit in it. He was shocked, he hugged us, cried and told us he loved us when we told him that you guys are still out there and you have been getting together!!! I don't catch his first name, but his last name is BUSSARD. He knew you Moose & you too Brewster! Dad was still working on finding new memeber even after his death! Can you beat that? Anyway, I gave him my e-mail address and he said that he'd contact me so he can get going on you all. I'll try to keep my eyes open to see that he gets here. You all talk care, and just let me know if any of you remember him. ATTN: WAYNE EVANS, include your E-mail address. I will be happy to explain about the "right" button on your mouse. I am looking for anyone that was on the USS DeHaven DD727 in 1946 through 1947. Please email me or my daughter Terri at tmcintosh@adea.com. Thank you and Have a safe and happy Memorial Day! Cooper Hope all you guys have a good memorial day weekend. The picture @ the begining of the dehaven asso. need info on how to get one. Anyone that knows my old shipmate, please contact me at mcwms5@comcast.net Looking for Ellis Bell Radioman year 1956-58 Great photo. I visited the De Haven when I was on the Mansfield, back in '49. I have some photos posted on the Mansfield page. I served on the DEHAVEN from Sept. 1964 through December 1967, when I was finally discharged. I was an IC3. Had a brother aboard DEHAVEN when I first arrived, Tom Davis, BT3.One of my best friends was Clarence (Jenny) Jensen. Glad to sign in--my late father Lawrence j. Lyons served proudly on the 727 during WWII. I visit ussdehaven.org to remember not only him, but all the proud men of the US Armed Forces. Seems I find something new each time I visit.
God bless you all, and most of all, God Bless America.
Larry Lyons
Pearland, TX My late husband served aboard the USS DeHaven sometime between 1957 and 1961. I thught it would be nice to talk to anyone who served with him. He was a Sonar man.
Lois I was a Radioman Third Class on the Lyman K. Swenson from May 1944 to January 1946. Was on the shakedown cruise of the Swenson. Don't seem to find much information about crew members during this time on the Swenson so am hoping some DeHaven loggers might find me and help locate crew on Swenson during May 44 to Jan 46. Did anyone get the brnze plack, just outside
the "perrsonal Office" on the fantail side of
the bulkhead? The information I recently gathered from here has been so helpful, and my grandfather appreciated it greatly. I was hoping there were some survivors out there who would wish to talk to or write him, if you knew his brother Vernon Bylow. My grandfather had heard that Vernon survived the destruction of the DeHaven, but did not make it out of the water. If there is anyone who could confirm that, or had stories about serving with Vernon, please email me. I also would love to get some information about the memorial in the Phillipines. Thank you and God Bless. Please edit my log entry from my old e-mail name to my new e-mail please. Old one is Wauhillia@tstomramp.com New one is jim.story@zerizon.net Thanks Jim Need the timeframe my father William (Bill) Corsa served on this ship? What year/what was his job on the ship? My father William (Bill) Corsa served on this ship in WWII - he passed away in 1962 & would love to hear from anyone who served with him - trying to build family tree & would love to insert this information into my research. I am absolutely amazed at the level and detail of the content that this association has in this website. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for giving me a place to search. My grandfather is Oland V. Bylow, retired USN. He joined after his brother, Vernon E., was killed in the sinking of the first Dehaven (DD-469). It has been a struggle for me to find official information from the Navy website or through official channels. It will mean so much to him to see the information that I have printed out from here. Please let me also pass on my condolences on the loss of your president. It is because of him and the men who served so honorably that I enjoy the freedoms and liberties I do today. God bless you and keep you all. HTFN ABOARD WHEN DECOMMISSIONED TURNED OVER . DID THE PRELIMINARY WORK WITH THE CREW THAT WAS LEFT AND ENGINEER OFFICER AT THAT TIME. Hey, Scott. I just sent you the info about the Memorial in Manilla to your e-mail address. Check it out! You're doing a great job, man. The site is great!
fyrnjn1 My uncle was aboard the USS DeHaven when she went down Feb. 1, 1943. His name was Chartley Brown Day, Jr. (Sonny to most that knew him. As, my father served in the Air Force during this time on B-17 - "Holy Joe" flying missions over Italy. My father had very sad memories of his WWII days plus losing his brother never knowing where Sonny was or where exactly his shipped went down. As a result, we children never knew much about Sonny or WWII. I have a picture of him aboard the DeHaven and that's about all. Anyone that knew Sonny, would you please e-mail me? I've been told, I am a lot like Sonny was.
I admire all you men. May God be with you.
Thank You, Leanne Day Smith Sfyrnjn1@aol.com To Mary Wisner.
Please accept my sincerest condolences on Dan's passing.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and family members.

a picture of the ship on his computer screen. I am joining the Navy and I thought I would see if I could
find a little information about this ship. Oh, And could I get a little prize since my last name is DeHaven? aboard 727 from 68 to 72 This is a great site. I was able to learn about the ship that my father, Vernon Gomes, had served aboard during the Korean War. Though the ship had many nicknames my father referred to it as the Raven DeHaven, occasionally as the Ghost of Raven DeHaven. Since my father rarely talked about his days in the Navy I do not have the specific dates when he was aboard the DeHaven 727. My father has since past away (November 1977) of a stroke. To those of you responsible for this site I salute you and thank you again for the look into my fathers past. Welcome aboard Bob. We have a great site thanks to two guys that have put in a lot of time for this site. So we have to give Dan Wisner and Scott Martin a big Thank You.See you guys in Texas Carl R.Leffel ( Dick ) Happy to read the entry from shipmate Bob Hansen, who we've been looking for since early 1994. I remembered him as 'Henry'...that may have contributed to the failure to locate him. But being an intrepid DeHaven sailor, he found us! Nice going, Bob, and welcome (back) aboard. Just got a note from the oil king that was on there when I left the ship. We chumed around a while together and I have been trying to find him like I did Moose. I guess he found the DeHaven site and sent me an E-mail to answer a note that I posted back in April. His name is Mil Koeltzow From Wheat Ridge, Colorado, sub of Denver. I had asked about him at the reunions but nobody could remember him. So another old salt has been found.

Carl R. Leffel "The Snipe727" My father, Bill Curran, served aboard the DeHaven in 1944-45. He died in 1967, when I was three years old. I would love to here from anyone who knew him. (Hi sister, Geri!) My father Henry HIMMELSBACH was on the USS IOWA as a Gunners Mate; it was designated the BB-4, as there were many USS IOWAs. There is a website that has many ships on it, I just don't remember. Gerald HIMMELSBACH was on a carrier. I stationed aboard DeHaven from September of 1966 until December of 1967. I would be interested in hearing from anyone on the ship during that time period. I was a Machinist Mate in Main Control. A great nostalgia trip. |
