DeHaven Reunion-1999 Colorado Springs

Day Two

Click here to see Air Force Academy PicturesThe second day weather was just as nice as the first, just a bit cooler. Today was the first of our tour days.

Air Force Academy

First stop, the Air Force Academy. We boarded the bus in the morning and departed north a few miles to the Air Force Academy. We went onto the campus and stopped at the famous Air Force Chapel. We had time to tour the entire chapel, which has a separate section for each denomination. All the members had an opportunity to stand on the front steps and swap cameras and pose for pictures. The weather was a bit breezy, but still pleasant. After the chapel, we moved on to the visitor center where we saw a brief movie about the Air Force Academy and browsed the gift shop.

Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods is an area of rock formations that are very beautiful. We took a drive through the area and were able to stop for some photos.

Manitou Springs

For the rest of the day, the group split in two, one shopping for the afternoon in Manitou Springs, the going on to Pike's Peak.

Pike's Peak Cog Train

We boarded the Pike's Peak Cog Train for the laborious one-hour plus trip to the top. The grade is very steep, hence the need for a cog wheel on the train to keep the wheels from slipping on the tracks. As we proceeded up the mountain, it began to get colder and colder. The group was treated to spectacular views from the top. It was very cold and windy and all were happy to spend some time in the gift shop. The bus met us a the bottom and we returned to the hotel.

Cog Railroad PicturesUpon returning to the hotel, all were pleased to see that Marie Penington had made it. Although she was still pretty banged up from her accident, she was high in spirits. The rest of the evening was spent visiting or going out to dinner. It was a long day, but a lot of fun.
