DeHaven Reunion-1999 Colorado Springs

Day Five

snowfallDay Five of the 1999 Reunion started out normal. At 12:05 AM the temperature was still 57. A storm front came in and dropped the temperature to 33 degrees at day break. We began to get a light rain and by mid-day, it had turned into snow. The snow continued to get heavier throughout the day leaving a nice blanket about 3 inches thick. It seemed a fitting way to end the reunion as this was primarily banquet day.

Olympic Center

A tour left in the morning for the local Olympic training center. Other than the less than perfect weather, all that went enjoyed the tour.

Banquet

Click for banquet picturesThe reunion banquet was held in the evening. As new members had been trickling into the reunion all week, we now had a total of 109 seated for the banquet. A memorial service was held for 18 of our departed shipmates. A special tribute was given for Fand Dailey and Tom Bogard, two of our members that had been to almost all the reunions and past away in the last year.

The guest speaker was James Smuda, an officer during the Vietnam era. It was James' first reunion and he remarked about how he now sees that the later sailors were doing all the same things as those that went before them. He felt honored to have been able to carry on such a rich tradition.
