Carl "Gene" Starkey 1928-2016


Carl "Gene" Starkey, 87, of Baytown was born May 21, 1928, in Rusk, TX and passed away Friday, March 4, 2016, in a local assisted living facility. He was a proud U. S. Navy and U. S. Air Force Reserve veteran. He served from 1946 through 1947 aboard the USS DeHaven DD-727 as an SK3. He was a long time member of the DeHaven Sailors Association and served as their chaplain for many years. He attended over 15 reunions of the DeHaven Sailors Association and will be missed by many.

He retired from the Baytown Exxon Refinery. He was a very active member of Goose Creek Masonic Lodge #1192, where he held many offices and a member of the Baytown Shrine Club and was a 33rd degree member of the Houston Scottish Rite. He was also a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Ethel Starkey; wife, Louise Anderson Starkey; and five brothers and one sister. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Denise Starkey of Crosby; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Jean Starkey of Garland; sisters, Jane Burkett Platt of Baytown and Betty Brown of Gatesville; grandchildren, Justin Starkey of Baytown and Jeremiah and Catt Starkey of Crosby; great grandchildren, Ethan and Allison; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
