Courtney Miles
October 06, 1929 – December 02, 2008

Our loving father and grandfather, David C. Miles, 79, of
Waco, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2008 after a long struggle with
diabetes. He was interred at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in
Killeen, Texas.
David was born in Carbondale, Illinois on October 06, 1929
to Herbert Courtney Miles and Augustine Louise (This) Miles. During the
Korean War, he served his country in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. DeHaven
DD-727, one of six destroyers to be "sitting ducks" in the Battle of
Inchon.
David believed in education and dedicated his life to
learning and teaching. He received his Bachelor of Science at Sul Ross
State College in Alpine, Texas, his Master of Arts at Adams State College
of Colorado in Alamosa, Colorado and his doctorial studies in Education
Administration at Colorado State College in Greeley. While getting his
education, he taught high school in Texas then Colorado. His love of
children with special needs lead him to become the Director of Special
Education of Colorado. He implemented House Bills 1060 and 1164 in the
Handicapped Children’s Education Act. He also developed the Westley White
Center in Julesburg, Colorado, which was the first county residential
school for severely handicapped children in Colorado.
He received many professional awards including the Annual
Award of the Colorado State Federation of the Council for Exceptional
Children- In recognition of Outstanding Contributions and Pioneering
Service in Special Education, in 1975. After retiring from the State of
Colorado, he became a commercial Real Estate Broker and owned several
small businesses.
Survivors include two sisters, Betty Lou McChristian of
Austin, Texas, and Marylin Forbs of Sterling, Colorado; one brother, Paul
Wayne Miles of Pinehurst, North Carolina; eight grandchildren, and five
great-grandchildren; his son, David C. Miles, Jr. and wife, Sandy, of
Green River, Wyoming; two daughters, Tammy L. Dobbs and husband, Mike, of
Waco, Texas and Terrie L. Milligan and husband, Mike of Acton, California.
