Dan Wisner 1940-2002
Dan was born November 16, 1940 in the family home on Deep Creek in Chehalis. He was the third of five children born to Elwin and Agnus Wisner. After graduating from Adna High School in 1960, he entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS DeHaven (DD727) in the Pacific.for two years. Dan then served in the Navy Reserves from 1962-68. In 1964 his only son, Danny, was born and he’s quoted as saying that Danny was the "pride of his life". Dan and his family moved to Meridian in 1970, where he operated a farm until 1975. In 1977, he moved to Nampa, and again joined the Naval Reserve, becoming active in the Navy Seabees. In 1980, Dan organized the first U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps in Boise. In 1984, the Governor of Idaho selected Dan as an "Outstanding Citizen" for his dedicated service to local veterans. Dan was President of the USS DeHaven Sailor’s Association. He was also a member of the VFW Post #3465, the American Legion and the Military Order of the Cooties. He received the following medals on Active Duty; National Defense Service, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Ribbons and the Sharp Shooter Ribbon. He received the following medals from the Naval Sea Cadet Corps: three Meritorious Medals for Outstanding Service, 2 Unit Commendation Ribbons, five Escort Officers Ribbons and the Distinguished Service Ribbon for saving the lives of 9 Naval Sea Cadets. Dan loved hunting, fishing, farming and tractors. He was always happiest tinkering in the great outdoors where he could enjoy nature’s beauty. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Nampa; one son, Daniel E. Wisner, Jr., his wife, Krista and their son, Tyler, of Oak Harbor, WA; one step son, Roger George of San Diego, CA.; two step daughters, April George of Nampa, ID. and Laura George of San Diego, CA.; two brothers and two sisters, Leroy Wisner of Chehalis, WA, Marlene Pontius of St. Helens, OR., Joanne Wisner of Vancouver, WA. and Ron Wisner of Rochester, WA.; three grandsons, Tyler, Gordon and Spencer and one granddaughter, Elizabeth along with several nieces and nephews. His father and mother preceded Dan in death. A visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, March 12 from 6-8 PM at Alsip & Persons Funeral Home in Nampa. A second visitation will be held on Friday, March 15 from Noon-8:00pm at Brown Mortuary in Chehalis, Washington. Graveside services will be held at Claquato/Sunset Cemetery on March 16 at 10:30 am.
