Charles Edwin Smith 1932-2021
He graduated from Utica Washington High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy in the radar division on the USS DeHaven and USS Helena during the Korean War. He worked at the Miller Company in Utica and Western-Southern Life Insurance. He was a member of the Utica Sertoma since 1971, American Legion Post 92, Utica Historical Society, Utica Friendly Senior Citizens and USS DeHaven Sailors Association. Former member of the Utica EMS board, Knox County Heart Support Group, Gold Wing Road Riders Association Chapter O of Newark and Chapter Y of Mt. Vernon and Bow Hunters Association. He was recipient of the District Sertoman-of-the-year award and Ice Cream Festival Outstanding Ambassador award. Ed was creator of the Ice Cream festival logo, Mr. I.C. Cream and Ice Cream Festival Parade Grand Marshal.He was one of the founders of Miller Park in Utica and served on the first Miller Park board. He was a former Utica Little League and Utica Herald Girls Sanctioned Softball coach. Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and OSU sports. He loved following his granddaughter's ball games and loved being with his family and many friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Louie Kathleen (Evans) Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Brady Duane and Sharon (Batdorf) Smith of Wooster; granddaughter, Trista Marie Smith and her fiancé, Matt Poland of Medina; sister, Thelma Jean (Carl) Kenney of Pataskala; nephews, Larry (Donna) Smith of Walhonding and Stephen (Kristin) Kenney of Ironwood, MI; niece, Tammy Robinson of Pataskala; and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert L. and Mary Lou Smith. |
