Comments: I was strait out of Great Lakes Bootcamp
when I came aboard my first ship USS De Haven 727. I met many friends that I
lost contact with. During my tour of duty, I had the pleasure of seeing my first
Change Of Command. I did a 6 month tour in Vietnam and was sent back again to
take over for a sister ship that had broke down. Hope to be in touch with some
old friends !!!! |

Comments:Glad to find out you exist. Benn thinking about my
service aboard DeHaven. After leaving the USN, three years later, I joined the
US Merchant Marine, Started out as a Fireman/Watertender, thanks to excellent
training and experience as a BT on DeHaven. Advanced over the years to Chief
Engineering Officer. Retired a few years back from regular Merchant Marine, but
still work on a casino boat in Louisiana. Hey, it's a tough job, but someone has
to do it. |

as I once did. I went through a apprentice program to become an electrician, and
still am working as one. |

Comment: Was the Supply Officer with a magnificent Supply
Department behind me. They made me look good enough to make RADM 26 years later.
We did the Eniwetok "Operation HardTack" cruise and experienced the power of
nuclear weapons up close and personal. Our Exec LCDR M Zenni was the perfect
leader. |

Comment: Boarded in San Francisco as the DeHaven left the
shipyard. Went on some shakedown cruses including one to the Seattle area where
we hit a log and bent the prop shaft - then on to WestPac. Home ported in
Yokosuka but went to Hong Kong where we were Station Ship. And to Taiwan and the
Philippines. In 1962 was transferred to DD736 the George K Mckinsey as ETR2 in
charge of the electronics group. |

Comments: Spent the majority of my time aboard the
USS DeHaven DD-727 during FRAM at the Hunters Point
shipyard located in San Francisco, and the sea trials to
check all the new equipment. That reel on
the fantail was ONE PIECE OF WORK! The transducer worked
great, until we hit a reef off Hawaii. The fathometer
showed a rapid rise in depth but time to
raise the transducer was too slow. Not a pretty picture!
Still remember good times aboard ship. |

Comments: I reported on ship in Taiwan in the first part of
1968 and as seaman apprentice (SA) just out of signal school and everyone on
the signal bridge was so very happy to have me. They sent me to the Chief's
Mess for 6 months. When I was not flipping omelets I was chipping paint or
handling ammo, high lines or stores. Only time I got to read light was from
2300 to 0500 talking to merchant ships (you remember 18 on 6 off three shift
duty rotation). Got to know all the Chiefs though and brown nosed my way to SN
in 2 months and the quality of the food even went up in the mess too, Thanks
Guys! The Shellback Chiefs got even with my cooking when we went across the
equator and they had that fart sack filled with my week old garbage not to
mention the cut off fire hoses. Anyone out there remember me? Give me a E-Mail
and we'll talk about New Zealand etc. |

Comments:The DeHaven was the first ship I served on so I have plenty of
memories, some good and some bad. I had never experienced hard work, long hours
and almost unbearable heat like that. I don't let anyone tell me how soft
sailors had it. I now work for a very forgiving God who had plenty to forgive
me for after serving on the DeHaven. Greetings and God bless to all. |

assigned to the ship during these years. |
