Capt. William M. Kaufman

Capt. William KaufmanCaptain William M. Kaufman was a 1936 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He first served on the USS Preble, a destroyer, and the Pennsylvania where he was the Navigation Officer, the XO, and the CO (for a period when she was in drydock) His next assignment was CO of the USS DeHaven DD-727 from December 1946 through August 1948. After he left Dehaven he went to COMNAVFE staff in Japan. Upon returning to the to the states he did a tour at the Naval Academy and a couple of tours at the War College in Newport and another couple of tours at the Pentagon. He was Captain of the Diphda, an AK in the mid 50's and Captain of the Calvert an Amphibious Attack ship (AKA) when he made the rank of Captain in 1959. He commanded DESRON21 on a WESTPAC deployment and went out to Seventh Fleet, first as Plans officer and then as Chief of Staff.

He retired in 1966 as the CO of Treasure Island, San Francisco and went to work for Crocker Bank. He was sent to Sacramento for a few years. He returned to San Francisco as a Vice President in the Trust Division.

CDR. Kaufman takes commandHe retired in '76 from the bank and spent the next fifteen years traveling, painting seascapes and golfing. He died on the golf course in September of 1993 while tring to chip in a shot. His wife, Cissy, son, Bill, daughter, Kathy and four grandchildren still live in the Bay Area.
